Cyprus might slide towards formal partition if a make-or-break meeting of Greek and Turkish Cypriot leaders at the UN this month fails to find a solution to the long-running crisis, diplomats fear.

Three years after the UN began its latest attempt to broker a deal, Ban Ki-moon, the UN secretary-general, has taken the unprecedented step of summoning the leaders of the Republic of Cyprus and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus to New York in an attempt to end the deadlock.

The talks are set for November 18. But officials in the UN and leading western governments have warned that there is a limit to how long they will back the negotiations, saying they are running out of patience with the inability of both sides to strike a deal.

I am sure that when the talks fail some bright spark will suggest that it would be a good idea to have some more talks and so on and on and on and on

I have this sinking feeling that the talks will continue forever

and with the complete lack of "progress" manifest during the first two years

in future look out for phrases like "the two sides agreed to disagree",

"there will now be a period of reflection",

and "we will continue our discussions but on an informal basis"

or even,

"one thing is for sure, we all live on the same island"

rivetting stuff

paul,

yes probably...turkey is a proud country

but it is an intriguing question exactly how both sets of talks, eu and cyprus

will finally be put out of their misery

just think how many more burning issues the un and eurocrats need to deal with

oh well, at least one highly-respected british paper the ft

recognises cyprus exists not only for holidays, or do I mean a dog and christmas?

Sadly, the realists are the one's amongst us that realise no progress doesn't help the cause re property, a 'real' TC rights to move freely around Europe and many more issues..

There are those who ASSume that an end to the current round of talks will mean some sort of 'benefit'.. especially for those in 'the north'

While the UN Security council Resolutions are in place - re the illegitimacy of 'TRNC' - something permanent members of the Sec Council - Russian and China - are unlikely to overturn - it will be hard for the EU to overcome legal 'road blocks' to 'reward' TCs for the Annan 'yes'

I would agree with most of your comments, mark

looks like we may expect the mixture as before,

more technically "a continuation of the status quo"

...very much as I predicted over the last two years

it is nice we can agree on something, occasionaly

re 17 Yorg

I knew you'd 'get it' in the end..

The hint has always been - * I WAS PRO A GC 'YES' TO ANNAN* ;) .. I said it was the best deal they could realistically expect and Tassos Liealotopulos is pushing up the daisies ( again!) and where is his settlement based on 'EU norms' ?!

This could all have been over nearly 6.5 years ago... TR in the EU, Varosha rebuilt, bla bla..

re 18,Mark;

'You knew what' I'd get in the end?

I have not changed my way of thinking just by agreeing your comments re 15.I just refuse to share them with 'third parties'.
