Have just got back from tonights quiz. On the plus side, really good, challenging quiz, nice supper and very good value for money. On the minus side, smoking is allowed inside. Such a shame as, being non-smokers, it spoiled an otherwise lovely evening and the owners are obviously trying really hard to provide an entertaining diversion in a very competative climate.

I too was there and am a non-smoker.

However, I was not affected as the people who were smoking were near the open door and away from the other customers. As I currently have a sore throat I would have objected had I been affected.

Great Quiz - really got the brain cells working and the variety of questions was not the usual quizzy type so very interesting.

Oh dear, there are now two posts ranting again about smokers. Poor 8.8, I feel for you.

Always the negative points, well done Hildysmith for your positive post. Like you say, the smokers,II wonder how many there were), sat by the door.

I suppose the next thing will be all the exhaust emmisions on the island damaging health.

No the ban has not been lifted, it's just that some people think it does not apply to them.

I would have smoked outside had I been asked since most of you if not all are old just out of respect.

However, none of you had a gut to ask!In fact,I'd have convinced Huseyin to not allow smoking on monday nights at least.

I suppose, what I'm saying in black and white is;stop whinging afterwards and just ask at the time.WE are all humans after all.

.....stressed out now,need another fag...........

ps.how comes none of you that goes to casinos foer free food and fags complain about smoking in those places?

good point yorgozlu I'll bet if it was free feed and drink at 8.8 it would be packed of the freeloaders and nobody would complain of smoke even if the place was on fire.

yorgozlu, answer to your question "because we KNOW the law allows smoking in casinos, as we KNOW the law disallows smoking in bars and restaurants.

Where the health is concerned, the law should not even come into it.

You are either against it or NOT!

My friend smokes and he asked Sabena if it was alright to smoke in there she and said it was, I myself am a non smoker but I cut a bit of slack to those that do. So you have two choices you either come and enjoy, or you stay away.

Topten - I almost agree with you - however it is 'supposed' to be against the law to allow smoking in public places - which means that for those of us who do not want to have to breath in smoke the law is a good thing - so why do others who do smoke think that it is ok to make all of us smoke too !!!

Just my opinion! Not that I go out at night anymore LOL ( too busy looking after the babe )

What ever happened to the inherent British right to drive his beloved out to a Countryside Pub, have a few beers over a pub lunch/dinner, enjoy a Castella cigar and drive home without any worries about DD. You Poms have ruined your own British traditions by PC idiots. If you don't like smoking don't go to the pub! Only exception is when a baby is in the room.

What is the matter with you all? all msg 1 is saying that it was a good quiz, only thing against was that some selfish folk started to smoke! ... Thought there was a ban on smoking in public places or is it just another way of saying stuff you lot, I will smoke! Just like the builders, advacates, and a lot of the law in NC, all broken by a few of 'I dont care brigade'....

iF Sabena and Huseyin has so many customers as 'friends', why would these so called smoking friends put them at risk of a fine.... Me thinks selfish comes to mind again.....

I am one of the smoking clan at bar 8.8 last night and would not normally smoke but I asked Sabena and she said it was alright, I do apologies for causing any discomfort.

Dizzycows, it was not selfish as I did have the good manners to ask before smoking as I would in any company.

I also think that Sabena does a great job.

Smokers seem to cope on a flight of 5 hours where there is no opportunity of stepping outside for a cigarette.

So why can't they manage a couple of hours in a restaurant where there is a opportunity.

Living in this "little paradise on earth" seems to effect the ex pats from the United Kingdom, seems to somehow change their outlook and the way they do things. Now I have never been to this particular venue and even though I was a smoker for 40 years, I think I would have had to ask the owner to stop this practice as it is illegal, just as it is in the United Kingdom. I would like to add that many things are now banned in the United Kingdom and most are to protect the general health of the population, so why is that people smoke in restaurants and why is it that ex pat dog owners feel that they can walk their dogs without a pooper scooper. I watch them all from my vantage point and I have not seen anyone remove their dogs turds but they would in the United Kingdom

well yorgozlu that sounds sad if you have that sort of attitude . WE are allowed WE, WE, so what you are saying is sod every one else, sod the law, Im doing what I want? Why put 8.8 out business?

decanddyl, you say you asked the owners of the place, did you ask every one in the room that happened to have paid for their drinks and quiz games?

You put the onus back to the owner who pos felt in a very difficult position .... why ask when you know there is a ban in public places? Its like a child, asking if they can do something when they know they are forbidden... like I say no different than the builders, banks and advacats.... All me me me .....

Thanks to all for responses. My only criticism for an otherwise great evening was that, unlike those who smoke, I did not have the choice about whether or not I breathed in tobacco smoke. I am so glad that on Monday evenings at least, 8.8 will comply with the law and there will be no smoking as it really is a very good quiz night.

Dizzycows,

I did not ask everyone in the premises as I thought the owner would have the right to refuse any request. I do not know if you noticed but there were ash trays on each table before we sat down so therefore the onus was not put on the owner. I would certainly not like to put bar 8.8 out of business. But you should not tar everybody with the same brush.

decanddyl, just sticking up for the business and the non smokers, its a shame when every one should be able to go out and enjoy an evening without some one feeling that its their right to over ride bans etc....

I was pointing out that if rule or bans are overruled, and you have instigated it, don't moan if your friends go out of business because of hefty fines....

1. We did not have an ash tray on our table

2. The people who were smoking were at the door or standing alone in the centre of the door-space

As someone who has had an operation on my vocal chords I was instructed that I could never smoke and that I need to keep away from cigarette smoke as it is an abrasive on the vocal chords - I was not affected - If I had been affected I would have said so for the above reason.

People who ask permission to smoke KNOW the law, which is why they are asking permission - they put the onus on the bar owners and put them in a position where they have to say yah or nay.

THE LAW SAYS NAY!!!! - so why are they asking.

As a smoker myself, trying to quit and married to a reformed smoker, I cannot see any excuse for anyone smoking indoors.

I have been outside in the current rain and gales this week in the UK trying to light up and hold an umbrella at the same time. AND that was outside my own back door!!!!!! There is no way I would inflict my smoke on anyone else.

Well said.

As it is the same for the mentioned place to allow smoking, otherwise they'd be out of business. It just goes to prove the difference between smokers and none smokers.

UI mean....lets face it............a drink is just too wet on its own.

Hi Hildysmith. Please don't think I am just moaning for the sake of it, I am not normally given to complaining but the table that I sat on was not by the door and the smokers around me were sitting at their tables, taking part in the quiz. I do not enjoy being around smokers in an enclosed space, especially whilst eating. Of course I could register my objection by 'voting with my feet" but hoped that by bringing this to their attention, the owners might be aware that some of their customers object to being in a smokey atmosphere and enforce the law so that I and other non-smokers can continue to enjoy their excellent quiz evening.

Well said Laptagal, its such a shame that things need to be pointed out... We all have friends that are smokers, and all can get along with out having to put up with each others habits or addictions ... Please don't ask the poor owner to break the law as it isn't you the smoker who pays....

I spoke to Huseyin today about this.

Though he has not said yes or no,I'll keep going on to him and will try to be there next quiz night to try to stop smokers.

I'll just have to stand outside and shout,'BINGO'.

I was at the quiz on Monday and as a nonsmoker did notice our table had an ashtray on it. I personally don't like people smoking next to me although if they were at another table it wouldn't bother me.

However why did the person or people concerned wait and complain after the night I am sure if they had asked the barman owner or persons concerned to light up outside they would have obliged and probably apologised at the time. It seems to me the people complaining on an open forum are more likely to get the owners into trouble than the smokers themselves.

Lighten up folks life is far too short and at least the suns out here. ( During the day !!)
