This is why i refuse to take antibiotics unless it is absolutely necessary....i have always been aware that at some point, an immunity will occur...

The other side of the coin?

The lives of half a million (conservative estimate) people are saved each year by the simple process of taking antibiotics where once the pharmaceutical industry made 3 - 4 billion dollar profit from prescribed antacids which was no cure at all.....

I agree, antibiotics are great, and have their place for sure, but unfortunately a lot of people over use them, so they become less effective. Should be used, as you said DD, when absolutely necessary.

Shame that more people who really need them (in areas of poverty) can't get them, when other people are popping them like smarties!

Anti-biotics are indeed a very good however as with all other medicine, my rule of thumb is only take when necessary, and no other course of action will work.

After my father died I took back to the surgery a large quantity of expensive, unused, unopened, drugs. With the insensitivity of a left handed cabbage the staff there threw them in a bin in my presence and said once they have been prescribed they could not be used for another in case they had been tampered with. I understood their concerns but what a sad reflection on modern society particularly when there are said to be insufficient funds to provide all chronically ill patients the drugs they desperately need. It makes good sense to me that overuse of drugs should be avoided not just because of the medical implications but also the cost if they are on free prescription.

The most important thing for people to bear in mind is that antibiotics only work on bacteria, therefore there is absolutely no point in taking them for viral infections... taking them when it's not bacterial only harms the body's ability to fight off infections naturally.

As antibiotics are available over the counter in the TRNC it's all too easy for those with clearly viral symptoms to buy them thinking they will cure their illness.. the body will generally do that all by itself given time and when it does, they mistakenly put it down to the tablets they took.

It's a bad habit to get into... and for those with allergic sensitivities to the likes of penicillin , possibly downright dangerous.
