FM,

Last September the exchange rate was 2.65, so your bill was stg £48. Today, the rate is 2.15, so your present bill is stg £127.

Gets better and better!!

I'm on builders electric and the rate is 0.92 this month. So if I had Frontal's usage my bill would be 642ytl or £292. Luckily my usage will be in the region of 300 units but will still cost me 315ytl (£143).

Don't use the aircons much, hour or two a day, sometimes not at all, then only bedroom. Pool pump going six hours a day, kettle on and off all day. We live here and we're home most of the time, so water pump for house going a lot, telly, music, electric oven, toaster, etc. Fridge probably not the most economic, either.

The 11% reduction from 1 September was also mentioned in an artilce in the Cyprus Times here today. The drop was due to lower world oil prices.

And what happens if that nice Mr Putin decides to close some of his oil pipelines and drives the price up to $200 a barrel as is being threatened?

rtddci,

I don't know the answer to that. What I do know is if he does it wont just be The TRNC, that has to raise prices.

Don't I know, Npower (who we changed to a week ago) has just announced today, price rises of 24% for gas & 14% for electricity. Think it will be huddle around a candle this winter.

We are with Scottish Power and were looking at moving to another supplier. We emailed them and informed them and asked that before we changed over to another supplier they look at our standing order charges and just confirm we are on the best tariff for usage. This then resulted in then droping our standing order by 15%.

Cyprus Today confirms this.....price down by 11% but..........if you don't pay the bill within 30 days you will be cut off & face a 750 ytl reconnection fee.

Best to set up a direct debit with the bank then you will be ok!

To be fair it was for 2 weeks as my son and his girlfriend were there but they assure me they only used one air con for no more than 1 hour per day . Still this time last year the equivalent useage cost was a fraction of this!!!

Sorry to say this Jim but if they are being honest about the air con only on for 1 hour then there must be something else that is seriously using up your electric. We live here and have about the same usage as Frontalman except we don't use air con every day though we do have a fan running all night and our bill will be around 300ytl at builder's rate. Are you on builder's electric as this would go some way to explaining the high cost?

Checked my July bill and it was 109YTL with nobody there. the only consumption being the pool pump and filter which really needs to be on full time. What also has gone up in the same fashion is the cost of a tanker of water from 50YTL last year to 100YTL today!! What I am actually really saying is that having a holiday home in these gloomy times is becoming a very expensive "investment" and its attraction when bought 2 years ago is rapidly disappearing. :-(

Have to agree Wackyjim , for me it is not only hike in cost of living , but i am really concerned that rip off culture , coupled up with unscroupulus tactics from solicitors , bulders , maintenenece companies , then we hear stories that say crime rate is on the up it has given me a reality check .

Have to agree with all the above. having been refused PTP doesn't help either.

Re the electric my friend who lives in NC had a Standing Order with his bank only for them to cock up payment and he got landed with the 750ytl fine.

Since reading a topic about pool pump times for an 8m x 4m pool I have saved a lot on my electric bill. I have my pool pump on now every 6 hours for 30 min and the pool is lovely and clear. Any thing over this period is a waste of electric. Even the the pool man has been converted to this way of working the pump.

==> Not really. It didn't happen in 2007 and it won't happen in 2009. Just a typo. Mrs. Eleanor Coles, Chair woman of the British Residents' Society, must have died on August 30, 2008.

Guys just wanted to have a say about everyone who is moaning about electric. I think everyone is comparing their bills to what they were in the UK but people fail to realise that in the TRNC we have bigger houses outdoor lights aircon on for four months of the year and dont forget the pool.

Lekky prices have increased here but they also have increased in the UK. Take away the outdoor lights aircon and pool and the cost will be the same as the UK

My friends in NC have switched off their pool, using the water on the garden and cut out the aircon apart from the bedroom despite the high humidity because of the cost.

Cut the pool costs by only having the pump on once a day for an hour. We did that last year and a big difference, and the pool stayed clean. Also don't put the pool lights on. Don't have a pool this year so a lot cheaper.

My pool is an 8m x 4m overflow. It won't go green as you still use the chemicals. Also noticed that the pool is not using as much water either, not sure why this is but its true I have only put in 4 tonnes in the last 5 weeks.

I feel so sorry for the locals because their income hasn't double within a year and what ever their bill amount was ,it has doubled - so ours of course, i must say in france electricity price is ruled ,so no such increase could happen - what can we do in cyprus, aircond is a necessity like heating for comfort to have a normal inside life and sleeping good -

Some Infos about Electricity costs:

Business Electric (esnaf, zanaatkarlar ve

ticari işletmelerde) per kWs: 48 New Kuruş

State Offices per kWs: 56 New Kuruş

Builders per kWs: 96 New Kuruş

Domestic Houses

Till 250 kWs: 32 New Kuruş

251-500 kWs: 41 New Kuruş

501-750 kWs: 44 New Kuruş

all above 751 kWs: 59 New Kuruş

Predicted reduction of % 11 from Sebtember, check your bills

Plus 2 New Kuruş on all kWs Santral Katkı Payı or Yatırım Payı meaning Investment cost for new powerstations.

Plus VAT.

Production Price per kWs: 38 New Kuruş on 31 july 2008 !!!! NO JOKE!!!

1 cubic Meter FUEL OIL PRICES:

(80% of TRNC Powerstations run on fuel oil!!)

January 2007: 227.23 USD

January 2008: 423.59 USD

June 2008: 596 USD

July 2008: 710 USD

Reference: Ahmet Uzun- Finincial Minister TRNC From the Papers

Example callculation for a 2kW Pool pump for 5 hrs / day:

5 x 2 = 10kWs / day

10kWs x 30 Days = 300kWs /month

First 250kWs cost you: 250kWs x (0,32 YTL+ 0,02 YTL Santral Payı )= 85 YTL

Rest 50kWs cost you: 50kWs x 0,41 YTL + 0,02 YTL Santral Payı = 21,50 YTL

Total: 106,50 YTL + % 16 VAT (17,04 YTL) = 123,54 YTL

If your Pump runs 10 hours / day then you have other tarifes! Your monthly consumption will be:

10 hrs x 2kW = 20kWs / Day

20 kWs x 30 = 600kWS / month !!

1st 250kWs cost you: 250kWs x (0,32 YTL+ 0,02 YTL Santral Payı )= 85 YTL

2nd 250kWs cost you: 250kWs x 0,41 YTL + 0,02 YTL Santral Payı) = 107,50 YTL

3rd 100kWs cost you: 100kWs x 0,44 YTL + 0,02 YTL Santral Payı) = 46 YTL

Total: 238,50 YTL + % 16 VAT (38,16 YTL) = 276,66 YTL

Thats only the pool pump.

An aircon energy class D (mostly sold cheap in TRNC) uses with 9000BTU approx 1kWs per hr. Running it 5 hrs a day would be a total consumption of rough: 3-5kWs / day. (depending on your allover heatloss)

A standart fridge uses in hot weather 2-3kWs a day!

An A+ fridge about 1kWs.

So, the next calculations are up to you!

Sunny days

Good news for solar (PV) system users, bad news for all others:

Since years I am reporting that the means how TRNC is producing electricity is by far to inefficient, thus making it very expensive. I even argued that KıbTek is selling the electricity to cheap, not recovering its own cost, nor saving anything to invest for infrastructure renewing.

The bad infastructure and inefficiency were the main reasons why KıbTek could not be sold for 1 USD when TRNC tried to privatise it 10 - 15 years ago.

Since then the bad infrastructure was only renewed when turkey payed for the projects (see Bafra etc.).

The papers today report following:

Mr tatar (financial minister TRNC) says that KıbTek is selling its electricity to cheap and making lots of loss. this must be changed. The news (bottom text): http://www.kibrispostasi.com/index.php/cat/35/news/34970/PageName/KIBRIS_HABERLERI

So, the next price round is open. Lets see what will come.

regards
