So far this morning seven lorries have gone to the Waterfall in Malatya to dump rubbish. They are both from Alsancak and Lapta Beledeysi and are full to overflowing with every manner of rubbish. We have taken photos of them and taken registration numbers and intend to show these to both Beledeysi. I feel that those of us living in Malatya who feel strongly about this appalling situation should get together to show a united front to the authorities. I feel sure that if enough of us approached them we could get this ongoing problem resolved. Dumping rubbish by the waterfall and especially into the ravine will cause serious problems when the rains arrive. Please let me know if you are willing to join us in a campaign to stop this practice. Would welcome a positive rather than negative responsive to this posting.

Contact yout neighbour, Marion Stuart, who as a journalist has contacts in high places. Marion helped when there was a similar problem last year along the track leading down from Malatya down to Alsancak. Rubbish was dumped on the track following the landslip and the Alsancak Belediysi sorted it out for us and cleared the track. Some of the rubbish was their own!

We too have a house in Malatya above the waterfall. We were out until the middle of October and tried everything to stop the rubbish being dumped. We even had a full page spread in Cyprus Today. We contacted Marion jus tbefore we left and she said that she would pursue it. She lives in the village next to Vaughan. Someone suggested we contacted the TC papers. However our command of Turkish is not that good and we were due to leave. Anything we can do to help let us know.

I believe the mayor of Lapta is hot on environmental protection and, if some of the rubbish is coming from there, it might be worth pursuing that route. The number I have for Marion is 05428824313. Ramblers Holidays (thanks to the Walk & Eat North Cyprus book) have just started walking tours on the island and one of their walks is from Karaman through Ilgaz down to Alsancak which will take them passed the waterfall. They will love all the rubbish.

www.northcyprusfreepress.com would be very interested in publishing an article NOW, including photos of the rubbish and the lorries dumping the rubbish. Use my Cyprus44 email address if you want to go ahead with an article. The government regularly monitor the newspaper and so will quickly become aware of the dumping.

Perhaps if you drive a couple of cars up to the start of the ravine road and block the entrance this might stop them tempoarily. If they can't get down the track they can't dump the rubbish. Just please let Malcolm and Wendy know what is happening as they are living full time at the end of the track in the Greatstone homes and that is the only way off the mountain.

When we were over back in June like flossie in September, we also took pictures and went to the Beledeysi with the evidence as we all have homes up there, but the dumping just continues there must be something that can be done to stop it. The local children are scavenging through the rubbish which is dangerous in itself.

I am absolutely stunned that this has been going on for at least 6 months what the bloody hell are Lapta and Alsancak Beledeysi doing to condone and actively be a party to this illegal disgusting and dangerous tipping of smelly rubbish.

maz they were alive, we saw a beautiful golden lab and stopped to feed it as it was raiding the bins, with that 4 more came. in all fairness i didn't see 10 i got a phone call to tell me, I couldn't dispute it because all the dogs i fed where well looked after, collars and flea collars. we didn't wait as they were scared so we left the food and we left. I do not think my source lied to find 4 or 5 already there my guess is that its true

The Alsancak and Lapta lorries continued until darkness fell. We estimated from the number of lorries and their loads that over 300 tons of rubbish has been dumped at the waterfall site. Whether more will appear today we do not know. We visited the Beledeyise during the afternoon, just took our phone number and showed little interest. Thanks for all the suggestions and offers of help received from the forum, we have followed these up and hopefully can get some action taken (maybe!).

Has anyone tried contacting the Environmental Group which has about 90 members and which is Turkish Cypriots concerned about the island! Head is Kenan Atakol. If Turkish Cypriots don't care, and Turks don't care, I don't think anyone is going to listen to Brits.

What do others think?

Maz,

I have googled Kenan Atakol and the Environmental Group but cannot find any contact details. Can you help/

I have just been reading northern Cyprus Free Press and cannot believe what has been dumped in such a beautiful spot. Have a look at the photos

The thought of having to drive past this everyday when we go out to our house makes me feel sick. I also hate feeling so helpless. At the moment I never want to see Malatya again. I used to love the place for its peace, quiet and beauty. It is being ruined by the thoughtless actions of the Beledeyise.

Now i hear they the government are offering incentives to tour operators again. They never paid last time. Now someone like our DC should make maps of all the sites used for dumping. We get Lapta trucks every day.Our landlord has ben away for a year. The house is by the beach and during the summer someone came and put milatary signs up outside the wall and actually attached one to the wall.He went mad and said why didnt you stop them HELLO.

Maybe it would be a good idea for Lapta to REFUSE tgo loan any lorries to Alsancak,. And maybe it would be a good idea to ask Alsancak as to the purpose of these lorries. As they are very large lorries - what did Lapta think they WOULD be used for.

So can we take it that no more Lapta lorries will be seeing dumping rubbish. That could be the easiest way to stop much of the dumping.

As to Alsancak telling the muhtar of Malatya that it won't happen again - tee, hee, hee - they said that weeks ago when someone else complained.!

So, what's to do. No one does it, no one is repsonsible, it continues to happen, promises are made that it will stop, but NOTHING changes.

Ideas?

berkeh2001, who are you and how do you know that the lorry carrying the "Lapta" logo was being driven by an Alsancak employee? Are we next going to get someone posting here saying that Alsancak loaned their lorries to Lapta? Whoever you are, and whatever has happened, a lorry bearing the Lapta logo has been used to illegally dump rubbish, if the lorry has been loaned then I think that YOU should demand that whoever has dumped the rubbish using that lorry should clear the mess up instead of criticising those who brought this information to light.

I suppose that this is a futile request but if the Belediyese agree to stop tipping I do not suppose they would remove the worst of the rubbish ie mattresses etc, that will not rot down. I can see pigs flying past.

Having started this whole debate off, we are glad to see that most people feel as incensed as ourselves over this practice. My comment to Troodo would be to ask what he thought the lorries were going to be used for if not dumping rubbish. I have indicated to Vaughan that Peter would also be willing to come along with all the photographic evidence to show the Belediye. We do hope that some changes will be made following the stand we have taken although some cynics would probably disagree with us!

Sylvia I have had a response from Ian Shepherd at Cyprus Today to say that he is going to investigate the tipping again. Just an idea but why not ask him to come with you to the Beledeyise so he can hear their excuses from the horse's mouth.

ADVICE FROM CEKOVA.

Write a letter to the Minister of Interior Ilkay Kamil and have as many people as you can find to sign it. Send also the copy of the same letter with signatures to the President, to the Prime Minister, to the Minister of Environment and to the Turkish Ambassador (He is a great environmentalist). If possible, form a committee of five to ten people and deliver the letter yourselves.

tHE ABOVE IS ADVICE AS YOU CAN SEE. MAYBE SOMEONE WHO STARTED THIS THREAD COULD CALL A MEETING, MAYBE AT THE COFFEE SHOP IN MALATYA! Going it alone is difficult, and I would have thought a group could answer Lapta workers protests better than any indijv idual. Whilst I can appreciate their potential anger at the use of their lorry, - one has to ask 'what on earth did they think it would be used for'. So, who is game for this. Also copies of the photos would be appreciated by Cekova.

Hopen this is of some help.

I find it absolutely amazing that the goverment is doing nothing about

all the rubbish lying about, and half built houses on building sites that

are just left. Yet they are trying to promote tourism, they have just to

over to the south to see the beaches etc which is kept spotless.

This rubbish tipping has been going on @ Malatya waterfall ravine since last March, at least 7 months ago. When we were over we took pictures of the trucks dumping the rubbish and went to the Beledysi with them and complained vrey strongly. As Flossie quite rightly states we have to drive past all this sh.t everytime we go to our homes as well as trying to navigate along the track past the tippers, it has got to stop. I just wish we were over there I would support any inititive to try and stop this. Will gladly put our names to any petition/letter in support.

Why wasn't Mal told! I thought earlier in the thread it was suggested that Mal was one of the party of complainants.

As to Lippylush, maybe strong stern letters from afar will be just as effective as being in Cyprus, BUT, one has to ask to what extent the authorities listen, smile and then do nothing. Why should they listen to a bunch of foreigners when the locals say nothing!!!!

So what has happened, and who is the President of Alsancak Council. I thought they had a Mayor in the shape of Mr Atakara? And again, may I ask who is the respected Turkish Cypriot who is going. I didn't know there were any Turkish Cypriots in Malatya - well, I know a couple of renters, but don't think it is them.

dying of curiosity here!

Heard from a friend today that a huge lorry went through the village carrying concrete with spikes sticking out! So obviously the dumping has not stopped. (This is now the end of November!). Alsoheard that the rubbish collection site near The Black Olive is virtually empty.

So what happened with the trip to see the authorities?

Maz, the Minister of Interior has assured everyone that this would not happen again so we all need our eyes tested!

Just what does one do surrounded by so many smooth tongued people in authority. The honey drips from their tongues but their actions are poison.

Where is the antidote?

Or should the Malatyans hire those wonderful lorries from Lapta and take the rubbish away from the waterfall and place it outside Government buildings as a Festive Season pressie?

Or could they end up in jail as the police would be called and these nasty, unhappy people would be prosecuted for trying to restore beauty, when no one gets prosecuted for creating ugliness.

O fortuna!

Maz, that would be illegal and I'm sure the government would not tolerate illegal illegality, you know, the law breaking they don't do themselves

Love your sense of humour Malsancak! But where IS the answer! Or is it just a question of time before the island sinks below the waves under the weight of the rubbish and heavy lack of care? What hurts the most is the complete claptrap talk given to people. How does one learn such language to communicate effectively, AND would someone who started this all off please give us an update.

We are aware that Kofali lorries and one from Alsancak were dumping at the ravine again this week. Photos have once again been sent off and as the various messages on here indicate, I am not sure we can go much further with this one. Did our best, not sure appreciated though. We cannot tar all Turkish Cypriots with the same brush as I know some that are as concerned as the rest of us. Have to admit however that there are some who are complacent about the issue.

Not sure I want a heated conversation and possibly violence with some of the drivers of those lorries! They were turning a bit agressive when we taking photos at the waterfall. However, if you want to offer your car for this purpose, please feel free!!

The answer is for Turkish Cypriots to love the TRNC and what they do tells me that they don't. Strangely, we Brits are often accused of disrespect towards the TRNC, but only for our words, and yet it seems that the Turkish Cypriots who dump this stuff are showing the greatest disrespect for THEIR country of all. Only my opinion of course.

My contact details for him are a year or so old, so may be out of date.

Hope that helps. His English is not brilliant, but passable if you don't speak Turkish.

Would it help for interested parties to show a solidarity in terms of signatures, visitations etc? And if so, who would be part of it.

My own personal knowledge of Malatya is that if there is any 'fault' it is with the Turks who run the place. Where is the muhtar in all this. She is new and should be keen! Any follow up form her? If not, why not? What is the role of the muhtar anyway - apart from giving signatures for residency applications.

I agree with Mal, that the Cyps need to love their own place, and the ones that I know personally certainly do - so why are they not listened to.

Please keep everyone updated baout the Green Group.

Someone please give an update . Has the dumping stopped? And could someone now see that the village centre is not abused with household rubbish? It seems that householders are keen on keeping their homes clean but the exterior is of no importance. Or do I get a wrong impression from passing through the village?
