Good question. I keep asking myself the same. 10% occupancy in hotels. I new hotel in Bogaz, 2500 rooms. Many many more under construction. I am told its Israeli money!!

No water, no direct flights, economy on its knees. 40,000 troops from Turkey, just cooling their heels. Electricity costs (give us a bag of crisps`)

A good time to be bailing out of The TRNC? I think NOT.

Someone knows something, and they aint telling us the suckers.

I think we sometimes mistake property buyers for tourists. In the period we were waitng for completion of our apartment we visited the TRNC on several occasions, staying in may of its hotels and sometimes using travel companies. I am sure many other buyers have done the same.

With the construction industry now at an all time low, this has reduced the number of "tourists" to the island. Both are interlinked.

If the construction and government manage to sort out many of the existing problems for buyers then I'm sure there will be an increase in "tourists"

TRNC has been waiting for you!!!

This time next year tourists in their thousands will flock to the Island just to be in your presence. Thats the reason for all the new hotels etc....and your right most of the money is coming from Israel....they know a God when they see one!!!!

Hi Paul,

I can understand the Black Pudding Shop, but, why are The Russians and The Norwegians

piling cash in? Perhaps they are adrenaline junkies.! Bradus could be right.

Seriously though....Why is so much money piling in, when the whole lot is an unholy mess,

without a reliable legal system???

I was just surfing the net as you do, and came across this website http://www.holidaywatchdog.com. Being nosey I entered NC in the search box and came up with a few hotel reviews. An example of which is:

http://www.holidaywatchdog.com/9050-Kyrenia-Pia_Bella_Hotel-Holiday-Review.html

Worth a read especially the not so happy campers. Just thought this might be worth bringing to the table re 'where are the tourists?'

If prospective tourists log on to this site and see the useless, petty and uncalled for personal attacks on board members, by residents ,what sort of impression will they get and will they really want to come and spend their hard earned money.

Why do some members feel the need to turn every post into an attack on others, it really is getting very annoying so come on DC, give us a break or at least come up with a worthwhile subject to debate.

the best way to deal with someone who posts repeatedly in this fashion is to totally ignore what is said.Suggesting they leave or how annoying or arrogant just feeds there ego. on being provocoative if i were to make statements that stir your emotion and you reply 1 point me the more that join in the more points i get. if totally blanked i get nothing. I might just go away and try somewhere else.

Trouble with visiting NC is its not readily advertised here in the UK. There only seems to be a few specialist tour operators which offer package deals.

You wont find Thomas Cook offering it!

Hi Wilts Girl

The problems with the lack of tourists it is not just the lack of main stream TO's but also the problem for us tour operators with lack of available flights for peak seasons as all those who own property, rent villas or for whom NC is home snaffle the flights.

The country had a charm and was relativley unspoilt until recent times so was asey to sell but as more fancy hotels and property is built that one major selling point is disapearing making specialist and niche tours to TRNC more difficult too.

As fewer operators can afford to advertise the country it will get less trade too.

Good question. Locals who can't afford to pay the road tax on their own cars?

Just a thought.

Oh, and all you naughty people who live in NC and or who have a villa, stop snaffling those flights so that some of them 'tourists' can pay a visit.

Meanwhile just what 'delights and experiences' are there for said 'tourists' to see if they leave their hotels that will encourage them to revisit?

There was no complaint at the people who get the flights the point is that if tour operators cant get clients there they will send them to other destinations. (While people can still afford to fly.)

And before you start to compalin about not enough flights try to remember the economics of running any company mean that you can't only cater for the peak usage as most of the time your capacity will be severley under used and the prices will rise further to cover for this. You can't just mothball planes, pilots, cabin crew and ground staff (effectivley putting them in a cupboard) for 40 weeks of the year which is what would happen if the peaks were catered for

A number of airlines have gone out of business serving TRNC because they saw the peaks and ran scheduled services but did not allow for nearly empty routes out of season.

So the tourist industry must change if it will help the North Cyprus economy survive. And all locals (including expats) must change their attitude to and about tourists and the tourist industry as well as what they say about this corner of the Eastern Med.

I was taking your comments tongue in cheek I'm afraid. Don't mean to make light of a serious situation.

As for flights, I can understand the airlines problem especially with Zoom just going bust. I wasn't aware that anumber of airlines had gone out of business serving NC. Pegasus seem to be going ok.

I'm sure if KTHY stopped it would be disastrous for NC. I can see the Greek side having fun with any traveller using the South airports and crossing the border.

As for 'So the tourist industry must change if it will help the North Cyprus economy survive. And all locals (including expats) must change their attitude to and about tourists and the tourist industry as well as what they say about this corner of the Eastern Med.'

I'm not sure what you are inferring in particular.

One point I would make is the way expats and thus tourists have been treated (see the many whinges, sorry legitimate concerns) expressed on this and other forums i.e. lack of legal protection, lying lawyers, estate agents, builders, litter dumped anywhere, roads, accidents etc etc.

As previously posted its interesting to see the Cyprus Mail was saying hotel in the ROC are 95% occupied for August despite complaints about how bad the tourist season is there as well.

The south would also be suffering from the strength of the euro as well for British tourists who represent a big percentage of their tourists.

The tourist is presumably a person who stays in a hotel. The number of these having been inflated by purchasers of property like myself, staying in hotels numerous times before completion. How many tourists have recently become owners, thereby not needing a hotel. Even worse how many properties will be completed in the very near future? Drive from Girne to Tatlisu and count them.

The hotels opened in the last few years have either missed this point or are very sure that a settlement will come soon with its increase in tourists and direct flights, before they have to close down.

The flagship of this must be the Malpas which is a great hotel but had some incredibly low occupancies in June and July. A beautifully designed building , well managed and a good asset to TRNC which could run into problems unless a solution comes soon.

I had half board holiday in CRETE this June and taking in I had hirecar for aweek and my bar bill for 2weeks it cost me a jot under 2000 for 2 of us.The same hotel next June 2009,same board, same company,no hire car, no bar bill,is£2006 just to go,tyhats one hell of an increase. So I decided to look for something else, when she who shall be obeyed, said a friend of hers told her about TRNC.I serched the web and found Ican rent an apartment, have a hire carfor 2weeks,quite a few of the famous or imfamous EFFES,eat well and still get change from 1750 quid, needless to say i am coming next year. (last time I was in Cyprus it was not divide and Kyrenia was the British Forces R&R centre.)

I'm coming , I'm coming , fear not jonny and his misses are coming back next week , I will try and boost the Girne economy single handely by feasting on the local produce and washing all that glorious scran down lots of the local golden nectar, this is our 6th consecutive year in TRNC and can promise that come what may with the price hikes etc , we will continue to come back and if all goes according to plan a will be either purchasing or renting within the next 18 months, buying preferably especially if the prices are returning to somewhat more realistic , we have seen the demise of Cyprus paradise and other operators to TRNC in the time we have been coming over and until some sort of settlement can be thrashed out there will always be the propaganda being pedalled by the other side making it hard to advertise the beauty of TRNC , at Arsenal's new ground there was a TC who put a TRNC flag over the stands where he was sitting along with many other national flags , and after a few games the compliants started to come in , not about any other flags just the TRNC one , the upshot of that is that all national flags are banned !!!! will the hatred ever end ? any way looking forward to next week and seeing favourite haunts

The problem seem superficially simple. If the govt (TRNC) stopped it's inane tourist subsidies to the clan members and subsidised flights to the island. more would come. From Germany I can get off peak 5* half board for as little as 89€ in Alanya. eg Feb-Mar 2009. About the price of a meal and a few drinks in Girne Harbour. _How many tourist agencies are there in Girne? Anyone counted?

Perhaps hotels should take more notice of what their guests say about them. 'Service' seems to be rather lacking at times.

I illustrate this with these 2 sites, not for the hotels themselves they are just examples.

Have no fear ,I think other tourists will catch on when they see what the price increases are for there holidays in hotels outside of TRNC NEXT YEAR. I certainly did and am looking forward to my visit to TRNC.

Hector.

I do not think you can take to much notice of tripadvisor etc. Though they give a good guide line not everyone posts on them. And as for tour company statistics people dont tend to use them now they book direct with hotels. Not only TRNC but everywhere tour companies have shot themselves in the foot by giving people 2 price levels. Time and time again you arrive at same hotel and someone has always got it cheaper than what you paid.

I hope you are right. I wonder if price increases will also affect holidays in NC. Meanwhile travellers booking on the internet (they'll have trouble finding holidays in travel agents or advertised in newspapers) are likely to look at holiday review sites (and possibly forums like this one). Genuine reviews are important. When I read negative reviews (and you can tell those that have the ring of truth) I despair. It doesn't take much to either make of break someones holiday.

It does rather depend on the tour company we have never done so nor would we. The hoteliers and airlines are doing it though as they often undercut the prices that they give the tour operators.

They then expect the operator to:

1] Advertise the holidays and hotels

2] Have large admin costs (not one receptionist doing a little of this and that with no expertise).

3] Take responsibility for the hotels and airlines when they get it wrong

4] Pay huge amounts of bonding and insurance to protect the clients

None of 1-4 do the hoteliers / airlines / transfer agents contribute to.

I do agree that two price tiers is not fair but you also need to remember that if an operator has paid for all the seats and space they may break even but make no money unless those last 5/10 seats are also filled.

I do agree with what you are saying, but when you get 4 brochures with the same property and with all different prices, not just by a pound or two but several it is very oft putting. But then I have discussed this with you in the past by phone.

Thanks for cheap flight tickets.

Wyn, Pegasus are not losing money - they have just ordered 24 new planes. They say that by 2010 they will be the largest airline company in Turkey.

Hi Wyn

Have been in the trnc for the last 2 weeks - got home yesterday lunchtime. It's been very hot out there. I'm also amazed by how much everything seems to have gone up by since we were last out June. Theres a great deal of uncertainty out there. A lot of homes are up for sale with people either wanting to go back to the UK or somewhere else. Yet they are still building out there. We drove out towards Esentepe - there are literally thousands of properties empty - and still they are building. Commercial as well as private properties. If you drive out the other way towards Alsancak there are properties there going up. On the road out of Girne I saw workers laying pavements in an area where there were no immediate properties in the vicinity. They were working under lamps up to 10pm at night! What's all that about?

I read an article in Cyprus Today a couple of weeks ago saying that the government was paying around £60m - yes £60million - per month in salaries and pensions to government employees. I'm amazed.

I certainly think that something is going on - somebody knows something. There is talk about a deal having been done and that the current talks are merely a formality.

On another note - the best meal I had whilst we were there was at Efendis in the old turkish quarter. Really good and wonderful ambience.

Oh well back to work - take care my friend.

Oh forgot to mention - There is a huge building going up opposite Ezic Premier on the new by-pass. I am told it has been funded by a Greek Cypriot Entrepenour with the help of a TC Entrepenour.
