We have major problems with build etc but there is no way we would return to UK. This is still a great place to live.

Just ignore everything written on the internet become part of the local community and ignore 90% of former UK residents.

You have to weigh up the advantages and disadvantages of buying in the TRNC. Area is stunning and the islanders are some of the most friendly people I have ever come across. Property prices are some of the cheapest on the med. (for a reason)

Travelling to TRNC is expensive. However the biggest disadvantage is that the present legal system gives very little protection to foreign buyers.

I certainly would not ignore all that you read on the internet and that is said by former UK residents. You need to do as much research as you can and police that all work is being carried out, that your ptp is in the system and your contract is written in a way that protects your interests rather than the builders. You do not want any expensive add ons later on.

Most people experience no problems, its just a few, often with the same builder, advocate and estate agent that can run into problems. As always read what is on HPBG site and you will be starting out with some sound information.

Welcome to the adrenaline junkies club. Good luck.

Electricity prices drop in northern Cyprus.

Salih Usar

Famagusta Gazette 28.AUG.08

The price of electricity in northern Cyprus has been lowered by 11 per cent.

The "Council of Ministers" announced that prices will be reduced from September 1.

I found from the link on electricity.

Oh.... Badus ONLY HAPPY NICE comments on my thread please I have made the leap with eyes wide open. Know the risks, but this is a happy thread.

4 years ago TRNC appeared very appealling , low cost utilities , general cost of living , low crime rate , now 4 years on it is not cheap to live here , ripped off by solicititor who was paid up front , he is always off on holiday , never available , terrible year re stamp /registration duty issue , flights price hike , electric price hike , rip off merchants always lurking around . on the positive still have the weather , love my apartment , love the locals , will see what the next year brings !!!!!!!

gillken......

Yes, things have changed here in TRNC but consider this....has the UK stood still and not changed?

We moved here nearly 6 months ago after 5 years of planning and doing lots of homework.

We moved from the centre of London.....very expensive and crime rising on a daily basis.

Has it been easy?....not always. We have had our ups and downs.

Do we regret it?....NO.

Are we happy?......YES!!!!

I think it all depends on what you are looking for in life and as the saying goes "life is what you make it"

So my happy word to you is ......."Content"!!

Enjoy your day.

Thankyou for your comments, what I have noticed is the inability of some to be able to find something good to say about anything , no wonder we have wars.

Try a bit of loving the neighbours and helping people instead of slagging off each other!!

Somewhere to start if Brits hate each other obvious from this thread.... greeks hate the turks .......turks hate the greeks.... but we expect greeks and turks to love us....come on get real....I am trying to escape "us" what a horrible lot "we" are, always pushing our nose in someone elses argument, what is that saying about your own back yard?

I have just broken my happy positive rule.......sorry,so what is YOUR positive experience of having a home in the TRNC?

Hi Gillken

We bought our villa 2 years ago as a shell and paid the builder up front (~crazy I know) - However, it took the 8 months they said and we now have a lovely home with pool etc with running water, electric etc etc. I know a lot of people have had serious problems, but in answer to your question, we are not doom and gloom - quite the opposite in fact.

N Cyprus is a great place and we go as often as we can. Everybody needs to remember how things have changed here in Britain - Food prices, Gas / Electric through the roof, Petrol, Car Tax - need I go on ????

At the end of the day it is one of the few uncrowded places left in the Med where you can enjoy a day at an uncrowded beach, eat in fabulous restaurants, dont worry about being robbed or mugged, enjoy the warm friendly people - and wake up to guaranteed warm sunshine day after day.

The benefits far outweigh the negatives - if they didnt we would not have bought property there and we have absolutely no regrets (nor do the other people who have bought villas near us).....

Totally agree

We came over in May fell in love with a Villa in Tatislu, came home did our home work, was told by everyone that nothing would ever be resolved.

So with the info in June and July came back just to be sure and signed.

The next day the two presidents got together and suddenly a new set of rules applied, whow that FAST. I do hope hope that all works out well and I do hope that a sort of piece comes over the island, all I know is N Cyprus is beautiful and so are most of the people whom live there.

We went to Lapta for a meal at the Chinese (staying at TBV) Ken had some nice meals there. Anyway had a lovely meal and returned to TBV, had a drink in the Bar then returned to the apartment, I then remembered I had gone out with my bag quick check in the apartment and back to Lapta, Yes it was still there on the back of the chair a Geman girl was sitting on the chair and said she was getting concerned. Would that happen in the UK !!!!

Gill - no it would not. Nor would it happen in Italy, Spain, France or most other countries.

As I said - overall it is a wonderful place and the positives vastly outweigh the negatives in my mind.

I hope you enjoy your property as much as we do !

Yesterday I cut my lawns. It has been over 4 weeks of almost constant rain, that has made it impossible. Even yesterday I was sliding all over the place, and having 5 lawns it causes me stress as the grass gets longer, and more unmanageable. Green it may be!!.....but....

Enjoy the TRNC.

I cut my lawn every week but have not sat on or near it this year due to the rain. We have an acre I have opened a gate put up an electric fence and allowed the sheep to do most the work.

My hubby and I have been here 2 years and have no desire to leave. I'm not saying there aren't things that frustrate us but I wouldn't swap it for a life back in the UK for anything. We have made some wonderful friends since being here, our quality of life is vastly improved, we smile more, get angry less, aren't afraid to walk the streets, have roses in December...

wyn keep up the good stuff old man i really like your posts

but this person who has put 5 on here pipeeeeee has real problems out in trnc she seems to see rip off people everywhere, obviously dosent live in england !!!

or perhaps she was one of the brigade who were trying to make money from the cheap real estate on offer here 4 years ago and she has got fingers burnt

gillken the TRNC is a great place to live

yes it is not cheap but if you want cheap you should perhaps go to middle africa, peru bolivia or some such place, it is still cheaper than england,, oh my gosh i just got my council tax bill for my apartment in iskele its a whopping 60ytl now thats 'dear'.

went into a little bar in beyermudu recently and was charged 2ytl for one of wyns efes now thats 'dear'

Gillken enjoy the life and lifestyle in trnc the people are not as materialistic as the english (apart from cars) and they can accept NOT PERFECT

Hello gillken,

we love the TRNC it is so laid back, sure it is not perfect as MR said but then isnt that what has gone wrong in the UK, everyone trying to be politically correct and worrying too much about mundane things, sure prices have risen but there again haven't they risen everywhere

ENJOY THE PLACE GOOD LUCK

I am really looking forward to my own space in the TRNC, but a lot of negatives on this board put me off, I have Greek Cypriot friends in the UK whom are right behind me on my choice and are all looking forward to staying with me.They lost land here but are happy to go through the Commpensation route as it is not their home anymore.

I thought it was the right place, we had visited a lot of the other med countries looking to buy, we simply decided to take a HUGE gamble with our money but our love for the place was not an issue.

Don't do it and that will be the best decision in your life. TRNC is a mess, it's the failing, bankrupt Fourth World. Alas too little Brits will acknowledge it (only in certain bars and restaurants).

PS. Please ask for details.

Hi Dutch

I've been on the same forum boards as you for many years and have never heard you so despondent as you are at the moment. What has happened to make you so negative with your life? There are many people who are happy (ok Brits moan but that's a well known fact and we wouldn't be Brits if we didn't) with their life in general in Cyprus. I agree the place has changed over the past 5 - 6 years and not everything is for the better but its up to the individual to make sure they do their research and come to their own conclusion as to whether they should buy or not.

I certainly wouldn't change things. I still love the place even with the mass construction, part built shells, half finished roads, intermittent electricity. Its all part of the charm for me.

some people are unhappy because they`ve been unlucky and had a bad deal with the TRNC, others are happy as they`ve been luckier and obviously got a better deal and can see a bright future for the struggling country. i think the happy set FAR outway the unluckier ones. i for one can`t think of anywhere else with the attributes and potential the TRNC has. Spain,Bulgaria,Brazil,Morocco,Egypt ROC... no thanks.

Gillken,

A tragedy of unparallelled proportions.

I personally have been absolutely disgusted, by the way Sky television have portrayed that poor man, whatever his problems were. Sky want to stick to reporting the news, and STOP trying to create it!!

We live between Oswestry and Welshpool.

Not heard the sky account of the Mansion Blaze, but the fire was from deseil Kens mate was the fireman whom took in the Fire Engine in..... the first Fire engine crashed on the way to the property. Obviously we are all talking about it, the groom lived above the stable, it was his night off. We can't decide whether he had a brain storm or it was planned that the groom was not there that particular night.

Paid a bar bill at Girne harbour with a £20 note instead of 20YTL. The waiter must have run 500 yards to chase us with the correct change. Where else in the Med, or the UK would, that happen?

I never said i was any good at spelling.. so it seems i am the latest target.

does it really matter. Isn't there better things to do than pick on poeples spelling. this attack on spelling mistakes is getting very boring and i find it very offensive that you can't lighten up and just go with the flow.

and the Chardonay was nice thankyou.

Meanwhile you lot think you have problems? When pray, am I going to be able to berth my 300 foot yacht until these new marinas I keep hearing about are built? Where does one land ones helicopter? Tell me that! See always someone worse off than you me old mum says.

I have just seen upadates on my new off plan Villa. it is better than I can imagine. That has made me happy.

I have had a call off Remax Eileen, lovely person. She has been mentioned on another thread as helping out with a property issue.

She has said she has been speaking with the solicitors they are hoping the Cyprus solution will be resolved and finalised in 12 months.

Hoping for...... embaroes lifted....direct flights.....no borders.......compensation paid via the commision for land for both north and south.

She is from Turkey and lives in Exchange property, so she also has concerns.

Has also mentioned, "Turkey will not give up on N Cyprus because of its strategic position politically".

SoI am really happy.

rtddci,

Hi Martin,

We are coming over 24/9. Staying at The Ship as usual. Would love to meet for a Effes

(note little "f" is missing) or three.

Call by anytime. I would really enjoy that. Most of my wealth nowadays is vested in my stomach, so I am really looking for somewhere to berth that.

usually cast anchor in the bar, about 6.00pm (nauticle but nice!)

Hope to see you soon

Gillken: "I have Greek Cypriot friends in the UK whom are right behind me on my choice and are all looking forward to staying with me.They lost land here but are happy to go through the Commpensation route as it is not their home anymore."

This is a highly unusual position for any GC to take. Almost unbelevable, some would say.

oranecazzie: "I certainly wouldn't change things. I still love the place even with the mass construction, part built shells, half finished roads, intermittent electricity. Its all part of the charm for me."

With that kind of attitude is it any surprise the TRNC is in the mess it's in? You are inviting the conmen to rip people off.

I'm going to miss all those chucked away plastic water bottles along the side of the roads when they're cleared up.

I used to like how they sparkled in the sun.

I feel as though I've lost a friend.
