Absolutely nothing as the song goes. But how true is it? It seems to me there are people on this forum from UK who know nothing of the contribution UK has made to world order today. So I though I will divulge some of that beautiful history lessons I attended in sunny Lurucina-by-Sea Secondary school in the seventies. We'll start with the WW1. It's a good starting point because the predicament of the Turkish Cypriots find themselves in today is directly linked to the WW1. So what caused the first world war?

Nationalism, and everyone wanting to prove how strong they were, plus the fact that those deciding to go to war wouldnt be the ones getting killed. Why make the connection between a country's contribution to world order ,and war. USA has evidently, invaded or attacked or been in action agianst 70 countries in the last 15 years.Dont know if that is 'contributing' or dictating. As for UK, war against Nazi Germany wasclearly defined.Good war In WW1 the UK was indistinguishable from any of the other combatents in going to war,it just happened. Boxer War was to force the Chinese to continue buying our opium and turn more of them into addicts. Bad Boer War was to enforce our rule on the Boer States. Bad Basically countries go to War ,sometimes for self preservation, sometimes to help others right a wrong ,but more often than not ,for selfish interests. Iraq? So to answer your question Uk has done more for the world with our legaadmin system and inventions than by war.

All contributed to the WW1 but the cause of it was not so obvious. The Germans asked Britain to export pins to India. They wanted permission to trade with the empire and was refused. If trade was allowed between the Germans and the empire there is no way Germany would have declared war on anybody. So when you really analyze it all, millions of people got murdered in WW1 just to protect the profits of the British Industrialists. But the worst of it was the humiliation of the Germans at the end which directly contributed to Hitler coming to power and the start of the second world war. Reason, to get back the lands lost at the end of the first world war. But of course we all know when the fascists get to power and win a few battles then of course they want to take over the world. But the real question remains how does Cyprus fit into this?

WW1.. Casualties military/civilian 37 million in four years.......No war is a Good War....Britain has been a warlike nation since before the Norman Conquest..........Along with all the other ancient and modern Empire builders....Proud to be British? it depends which era.... My Grandfather survived the "Somme" and to his dying day said that, it was a barbaric waste of life on a scale unimaginable...Meanwhile the powers that be in London were having jolly "WAR PARTIES" singing "Where off to fight the HUN"......................"37 MILLION" dead or wounded!
