I'm interested in medieval stuff and the coat of arms of the nobility is part of it. So. When I noticed an advertisement from "The British Academy of Northern Cyprus" (ex-Sunny Lane school, but what's in a name?) on top of one of the threads on this board I paid some attention. The coat of arms of this academy shows a male lion, which I enlarged to see all details. Then, to compare, I added the coat of arms of Lusignan, kings of Cyprus (the only era, 1192-1489, Cyprus had a male lion in the coat of arms) to the graphic.

And there is something very wrong with the male lion of "The British Academy of Northern Cyprus". This male animal has to visit the vet and have his manhood checked soonest! Check it out yourself...

P.S. In some political correct countries it is no longer allowed to show the gender of lions in centuries old coats of arms. No kidding.

I saw a programme on television on this very subject a few weeks ago. The "full" male Lion is the traditional one. It would appear that Victorian morality, so they didn't offend young ladies, meant that the lions from that time were airbrushed.

it would be interesting to look at other coats of arms on either side of the 19th century. to see how widespread this neutering is.

The College of Arms in London is the only legal establishment which permits anyone to display a Coat of Arms or any part of a Coat of Arms eg the Crest. There are organisations which advertise "Coat of Arms Associated with your surname" etc. but no-one other than a member of that family to whom Arms were granted by Royal Charter is permitted to use, display, engrave the Arms or in any way advertise them other than a direct descendant of the family to whom Arms were granted.

The Lion Rampant is part of the arms of either the Monarch or a member of the Royal family.

To use this symbol without permission from the Monarch and the College of Arms could result in a hefty fine.

Is one to surmise therefore that the person using the Lion Rampant has been granted such permission, if so that person should without delay publish the permission in all relevant North Cyprus newspapers.

Dear Mrs. damchi, you seem to forget that "the tiny rest of the world" does not belong to the UK and does not care a damn about your royals or your royal family.

Dear Dutch Crusader and cypqab, you may not "care a damn" about the Royal Family but to use a cipher which is associated with them, and the word "British" in any advertisement automatically engenders the idea that approval for the advertised establishment has been granted by UK authorities. Thus I ask for the "academy" to produce such approval in order that there is no doubt in anyone's mind that the establishment has full approval from the Department of Education in the UK. As North Cyprus is ostracised by so many countries, I find it difficult to believe that there has been a sudden change of heart towards educational establishments in North Cyprus. It could be that the said Academy offers the best education in the Mediterranean - perhaps even better than most state schools in the UK - but any parent using this establishment in North Cyprus needs to know that full approval for the curriculum, teaching methods, standards and quality of teaching staff are UK approved.

RE msg 10, Pugwash: And what about the lions on the many carved coats of arms with "crowned lions rampart" in the medieval remains in (Northern) Cyprus? Members of the Lusignan dynasty in Cyprus, who introduced the crowned lion on their original coat of arms (as Lords of Lusignan), were vassals of the English king Richard I "The Lionheart" - I'm afraid this is getting too complicated for a simple foreigner like me...

Mrs damchi, let us know the answer of "The British Academy of Northern Cyprus" (ex-Sunny Lane school)" to your questions...
