I am always amazed by the gold in the shop windows in Girne and the fact that the prices are rarely visible. Is gold good value in Girne and is the glitter all genuine?

It is genuine it is not priced as it changes every day depending on the gold price, this is normal.

Their silver jewellery is lovely, I think, and have bought quite a bit over the years in Istanbul and some in

N.Cyprus. In the South it is all the usual, stuff you can get back home.

I doubt whether they would sell less than 14 carat, and probably 18. Some British seldom see higher than

9 ct. these days and don't recognise the high carat gold - they think it too yellow.

They do not seem to have much 18ct. I bought a ring here a couple of years ago which was supposed to be platinium. Its all rubbed off and im left now with 9ct yellow gold. Still love it though x

let me tell you about the gold here in cyprus.its a rip off.

theres no prices on anything in jewellers windows as the salesmen use their intuition, powers of persuasion and sales skills to gauge how much you as a punter, will pay for an item.

that opens up a window for a spot of haggling, but you will always find the opening price of the item you are interested in is astronomically way to expensive!,so its just not worth the hassle, you'll be paying well over the odds for something youd get at half the price in england.

You usually get a much better deal in Dubai, other places in the Middle east and most places in the Far East as there they seldom charge for the workmanship, they just charge for the weight of the gold, think how much a goldsmith would earn per hour in the UK or elsewhere so straight away there is a big saving.

I have been buying jewelry in the far east for many years now, either for my wife or my daughter or my sisters and have had each piece valued in the UK and it is no brainer but I must stress that I use the same group shops each time as I know them and they know me.

It is not just gold either as the precious and semi precious gem stones that are available in the Far East are unbelievable and once again the price is so much lower than most other places, especially the UK and Europe.

Cheers,

Alex.

Not having the opportunity to shop in Dubai, I have bought some good jewellery in Girne but I would recommend you to shop around. When looking for a wedding ring I found some of the rings changing shape when taking them off!

I tend to buy the white gold which is my favourite and I stick to the same couple of shops but do 'discuss' the price, they will always come down even more as business is really slow.

İn my experıence the gold you buy ın Turkey is of much better qualıty than the gold bought here in Cyprus. İts a higher carat and hold its price. You can then sell it back at anytıme and often get more than what you ınıtıally paıd.

They are not so keen here, to buy back.

thanx for the tips folks I guess rings will bend if buying 24K coz gold is soft, I guess in all parts of the world cheaper materials are painted to look like gold or platinum to cheat customers. I suspected that the shops dont have prices and its up to the sales team to get maximum pricing. So who is reputable, who knows?

msg 14. The 14ct gold I bought on my numerous visits to Turkey all passed the test at the jewellers here in the UK I got 3 times the value I paid for it, haggled the price with the jeweller and because it was 14ct I got a good return.

For anyone not travelling to Dubai, which I agree has great prices after bargaining, try Resat on the crossroads, bottom of the hill on the main street.

We have been there many times and always get a great deal from Huri the owner. A pleasant haggle over a coffee is enjoyed by both parties.
