Anyone know about possible restrictions on bringing a Metal Detector here

from either the South or the mainland?

think you might be o.k with a mine detector and it would also be a lot more useful...

We looked into this before we came here 4 years ago and were told in no uncertain terms that metal detectors were not allowed under any circumstances. Army thing apparently + I was also told that the people in charge of old artifacts and relics did not like anyone having them either.

you are allowed to bring them but you need to apply for a licence.

... which you will not get because you have to be TRNC citizen or a permanent resident. A status not many of us will ever obtain anymore. (same for pigeon appeasers, also called air guns).

Why is it such a no-no to bring a metal detector?

There's minefields scattered all along the green line. Can't have people finding their way through them and evading border controls.

A metal detector is jolly useful in a minefied. But personally I just look away and stamp my foot!

===> Have you got any idea what you can find in (Northern) Cyprus if you know where to search? It even happens now, done by young TC's, on the beaches (Roman ports) and other places. Would you like to buy some Phoenician, Byzantine, Roman, Lusignan coins etc etc etc..? No problem (and the customers are usually tourists), believe you me.

Wasn't there a post on this thread about the Turkish army destroying and looting Cypriot cultural heritage hence why the ban on metal detectors? Surely it hasn't been removed?

===> Amazing! Are you a temporary resident and did you get your lincence from the police?

I tried two shops where they told me to get a licence (from the police) first. And the police told me: only for TC's and permanent residents. NOT for temporary residents!

Yet more racial discrimination in the TRNC. Perhaps they want all the loot for themselves.

===> Huh? We're talking airguns, Pike. How do you loot with an airgun...?
