I've uploaded more old pictures of Famagusta, the best harbour in Cyprus and its central point: the Sea gate or "Porta del Mare" (the Venetian name). Start here: [ http://is.gd/huVSx ] and click a MORE button to go to the next page with photographs.

Hans, you have your "more" and "home" links the wrong way round, but when I got there, I enjoyed the photos. The second lot of photos are interesting, as you can see how much land has been reclaimed for the modern port.

The first photo, of the sea gate, is a view from the port side, so unfortunately, the closest most people might get to it is a view from the top of Othello's tower. A shame, as the port side is much more interesting than the land side. (Apart, perhaps, from the lion that briefly opens its mouth once a year to allow anybody that happens to be around to claim the treasure stored in its stomach!)

As an aside, the garden area there was the end of the Famagusta railway, and to get there, the town walls were breached. Do you have any information on that, and the route the line took from the Main station which was about 500 yards down the road opposite the Land Gate?

Thanks, Ian, I had seen the problem, but couldn't solve it right away.

Re: Famagusta Railway: I have not paid much attention to this railway, only saw the last remains in several places between Famagusta and the copper mines (near Lefke in thw West). I knew the Famagusta walls were breached by the British - you probably mean near the former jousting yard, now a soccer field - and between the Del Mezzo bastion and the Diamantino bastion? Btw: I've never found any train rails inside the Walled City.
