I always thought the north called it Hellim(i think that how say it) and the south call it Halloumi because we use to have it a lot when we was in the south side

hi

firstly hellim and halloumi are exactly the same it is a cypriot cheese, the only argument about this is the european commision last year who was registering the two names as the official name for this cheese got complaints from the greek cypriots (as they do!!) that how can hellim be registerd as a turkish cypriot cheese aswell if north cyprus is not a official country and is not reconised, actually you go into any greek cypriot market in london the cheese you will find there is hellim because it is cheaper in the north to produce and most hellim in the south is actually mixed with cows milk and goats milk, but proper hellim is only made with goats milk



again shish kebab and souvlaki are basically the same but shish kebab is more commonly used thoughout europe and this comes from back in the ottoman era when the soldiers used to use their swords with cubed meat and to cook over a fire hence the name shish which means skewer



the coffee its actually turkish which orignally comes from mainland turkey and was copied in all the middle eastern countries aswell as greece and finally cyprus the turksih word is kahve and is used in greek but there is not such a word in greek it is defo borrowed from the turkish language



yoghurt is actuslly a turkish name and is used in todays society thru out the world including greece and cyprus

Thanks UKTurk for your interesting info. on this subject.

Have just got back from a sizzling week sampling the usual;

hellim toasted, (we can get it in the Asian shops in Glasgow)

real yoghurt, shish kebab, tavuk, real yoghurt, Cankaya wine (favourite)

Oh, & we even went over to G.C side in Nicosia/Lefkosa & had lovely

frappe (iced coffee) yoghurt ice, & bought many handbags (Italian made)

Nice, but we returned to a lovely meal of pasta, to the quietness & courtesy

of a fine restaurant in the North. Everyone made such a fuss of the baby ,on

both sides, & no wonder, he is gorgeous.

hi

turkish delight or lokum as its known is defo turkish which first come around in the 1500's in afyon in turkey but then got its worldwide reconiction in istanbul in the early 1700's and is only known as turkish delight thru out the wotld apart in south cyprus

and recently it caused a big stink because south cyprus registerd turkish delight as cyprus delight at the european commision so in europe now it is known as cypriot delight scandlous but manufactures in turkey are appealing

Everyone knows Turkish Delight but there is also lokum made in north Cyprus

so I guess they will call it Cyprus Delight too, whether it's made in N or S Cyprus.

lokum is the name for turkish delight in turkish its actual real name is rahat (rest) lokum

in north cyprus its lokum or turkish delight not cyprus delight only in the south its called cyprus delight and this is due to them registering it with the e.u commision

and yes reproman this is very true mate hard to belive but thats what the north and turkey has to go thru even petty things like turksih delight!!!!

the name for the choc bar turkish delight has been trademarked so no one can tamper with that fry's or cadburys thank god!!!

hellim fried no way!!! lol the best without doubt has to be bbq if not then grilled the way i eat my hellim is dipped in olive oil and sprinkled with red chille flakes bbq/grilled then put in hot pitta bread or lavas bread yum!!!!

Yes, UKTurk I know about lokum (have worked 3 years in Istanbul) but I did

see in supermarket in Girne (Kyrenia) some Cyprus Turkish Delight, which I

thought was Cypriot version of it, & I try to support local produce wherever I am.

I found toasting helim in dry pan was quick & easy way for breakfast, with

tomatoes, toast or fresh ekmek. Sounds good with chille - must try that

Fry's Turkish Delight is well known & liked as it is the rose flavoured covered

with chocolate.
