Just heard on the radio the 1500 schools have closed due to snow, I do remember deep snow and blizzards when I was a child but can't remember the schools ever closing, have I got my rose coloured specs on again.

I work in a secondary school and we are closed today due to no buses being able to transport pupils in. It is in a very rural area and the mains roads are gritted and salted but the secondary roads are just ignored making travel very dangerous. Lots of burst pipes etc. yesterday so it's the only safest action to take today. The pupils are all able to obtain homework from their computers so no excuse for no work.

Loving it, I am stuck here in snowy Scotland. Edinburgh airport closed, but lovely warm house with central heating and the odd glass of wine in the evening!

Seriously though the roads are awful not fun to drive on, so safer to stay indoors.

I can't say that I am loving it but the thought of going out to TRNC soon is keeping me going. The odd glass of wine helps too !

I'm in the same situation as you Shrimp - our road is solid ice and I am not going to risk walking down there and falling over waiting for someone to find me. When the weather is good there is nothing more that I like than a good walk up into the mountains.

I doubt the government are too worried. 1 in 3 children would probably play hookie regardless of the weather, no loss whatsoever for the 1 in 3 who leave school illiterate, and 1 in 3 were probably due to be taken to Santa's Grotto in the Northern Hemisphere as a "jolly" for the teachers at great expense to the parents. Have the elf and safety quango banned Santa's sleigh yet ? Hope you all stay safe and warm.

I wish folk would stop moaning about the snow. It's a perfectly normal part of the season in some parts of the world! It's not going to last for months, like in say Russia...think yourselves lucky to still get snow...some people would think the sky is falling down in some parts of the world!!

Crank up the heat, switch on crap TV and open a bottle or few, and enjoy the excuse to not have to go to work!

I would give anything to actually have 4 solid seasons, instead of 2!

no work, no money, no electric, no heating, no crap tv, no wine..............not normal for November and it could last till March/April, so really this is not good................

...and as for schools closing for a couple of days...i seriously doubt it will be a total collapse of a childs yearly education....i mean, really!!

So get out there, take the chance to bond with the kids, perhaps teach them a little engineering, like how to build a snowman....there really is so much you can do, sitting at home whining isn't going to make the snow stop falling!!

swimming, biking, trekking, gardening etc. the weather here in TRNC is still very good for outdoor activities. It is unusual but we can just enjoy it. On the other hand it is not good for our nature. I think climates are changing very fast and this is not a good thing...

I retired from teaching in scotland earlier this year and used to long for 'snow days'. My former school has been closed since last Thursday. I was playing golf in a t-shirt and crop trousers today - so no prizes for guessing which I prefer!

For crying out loud!! You're making out like it's the end of the world!!

It's a few days, perhaps a couple of weeks!!

Honestly, life really does NOT stop with a spot of snow!!

It does on Exmoor, DD, it really does, believe me..........it is not the snow but the ice on the road, it is lethal and anyone in their right mind would not even attempt it at the moment

too true, Glasbury, too true, it is miserable, not being near a shop, bus stop etc......we are imprisoned, and no children to make snowmen with, go sledging or whatever else DD suggests....I have a sports car and it is just like a skaeboard on the roads, so it really isnt nice at all being here in as you say minus degrees.....only enough oil to last a couple more days as the oil tankers cant get to us!!! But hey, mustnt wine!!! its may only be for a couple of weeks.....

I don't mind cold and dry weather, in fact it's lovely to go for a walk then but this ice stops you from going anywhere and the novelty of snow is wearing a bit thin now. Never mind, things are bound to improve soon. Chin up !

Sorry to say this, but when I was a child you walked to school. We didn't even have a car as a family until the late 50s, but you still walked to school. We didn't have CH either. I lived in the South East. I went to Secondary school by train & during the winter 1962/3, the buses couldn't run & we had to walk 3 miles in deep snow. Schools did not close then. We survived. Britain is now a nation of wimps.

I was born in 1948, so I'm not that much older than some of the posters who are making a fuss.

My business partner in the UK operates 18 coaches to cover Council School Runs in Lincolnshire.

He, is only told that schools are closed by the Local Council at 6am. Parents only get to know if they listen to the local radio or turn up at the bus stop to find no bus comes. So for the parents that means a day of work at least.

On the other hand for me I've had 6 dock workers at Immingham Docks on payed leave today because Harbour cranies dont like Ice.

Maybe not the end of the world DD but its a BIG problem for some!!

At the end of the day, whether you get 10metres or 10mili-metres it still makes your life difficult...

Sorry hattikins. I may have sounded like I was disagreeing with you, but you were right, schools didn't close.

How do they get on in countries where it snows heavily for several months every year. Switzerland, parts of the USA, Canada & Russia to name just a few. I'm sure all the schools do not close for months on end?

Oh yea Panchocat. Like clearing the path of snow and ice. Scraping frost of the windscreen so that you can go to work, wearing layer upon layer of clothes and it's still bloody freezing...Oh yea!!!
