All government and public offices will be open from 8: 30 am to 4 pm during weekdays, for the exception of Thursdays when offices will be open between 8:30 am to 1:30 pm and 2 pm to 5 pm.

Taken from BRT news.

Today there must be a strike as all govt offices appear closed.

Went to pick up my renewed driver's licence this a.m. @ Girne tax office - the place was deserted!

Many other people turned up at the same time, saying that government workers were on strike, post office ['workers' outside with placards] closed, etc., but nobody seems to know for just how long this caper will carry on!

heard from my neighbour tonight that the new working hours did not provide a dinner break that is the reason for the strike today but another is planned for the 9th.

According to Cyprus Today:

Government Offices will be closing early at 3.30pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays (offices open at 8am), according to the new "winter" timetable.

On Thursdays, offices will be open from 8am to 1pm and open again from 2pm until 6pm.

However, on Thursdays in January and February only, offices will close at the earlier time of 5pm.

The new hours come into effect on December 1.

Differs from BRT news, so which one is right?

Being a 'young' worker (28 years) and always having to arrange with colleagues lunch hours, does any of the more mature workers know when flexi or shift hours came into practise in other countries. Offices at all times had to be manned from around 08:00 – 18:00, admittedly only skeleton crew had to be in at 08:00 – 10:00, 12:00 -15:00 & 16:00 – 18:00, the hours missing were chore time and you had to be there and also had to work 140 hours in a four week period. I was only thinking of this the other day when I arrived at one office at 11:45 to find the door shut, I was trying to pay them but had to go back another day. I fully understand if it was in my contract my lunch was 12:00 - 13:45 I would want to get away on time but I suppose if all staff are entitled to 1 3/4 hour lunch are there enough staff to cover the lunch period? I am sure if government offices were open longer it would help the private sector.
