ANKARA, Turkey — Turkey's prime minister is flying to Tripoli to attend an EU-African summit and receive a human rights award, given in the name of Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan's government is planning to open several diplomatic missions across Africa to boost relations with African nations while seeking to become a member of the European Union. Turkey already has friendly ties with Libya and Sudan.

msge 3

If Middle Eastern countries are going to give each other awards and prizes for international acts of altruism, then this can't be a bad thing. They may be more inclined to do good, which is great.

I just didn't expect to see Gadhafi and human rights mentioned in the same sentence, and I certainly did not expect to see a human rights award given in the name of Gadhafi. I could be doing Gadhafi an injustice.

Does anyone know what good acts he has done over the last five years?

The last I heard, he was that he was calling for a Jihad against Switzerland, a country who voted against the building of minarets on their soil. He holds a grudge against Switzerland, because the Swiss detained his son for beating up two of his servants in a Swiss hotel. Gadhafi senior retaliated by arresting two Swiss business who were incarcerated on bogus charges.

In his speech during the award ceremony, Erdoğan said Islamophobia is a crime against humanity, adding that no one can attack things that are sacred to Muslims using freedom of expression as an excuse. “Muslims come from a tradition that regards anti-Semitism as a crime against humanity,” prime minister said. Erdoğan added that he will continue to bravely protect the “truth,” adding that everyone is equal when it comes to justice. He said the prize he received will strengthen and support his struggle for human rights.
