Has anyone else had a problem with Kerry Gold Salted Irish Butter, 227 gm block.? We bought some yesterday in an Alsancak supermarket,-sell by date 22.02.2011, cut off a piece for the butter dish, spread it on toast, only to find it was rancid. Yuk!! Difficult to return since we've cut it up. Rather concerned that all Kerry Gold stocks may come in the same lorry, and could have warmed up on the way.

The principles of storage in supermarkets are not understood here. Recently I noticed a box of packeted fish for sale out in the shop without refrigeration. On the packet it said store below 5oC. Just look at the freezer cabinets, should be at minus 15-20oC, I believe, but often aren't. How do you know that other items haven't been left to defrost and then placed in a freezer? Profit before people can sometimes be the philosophy. I'm afraid that once I discover spoilt frozen or refrigerated food in a supermarket I avoid it.

Have to agree, they have no idea how to store frozen food. In the Iskele Lemar the frozen food is always piled way over the red line.

I mentioned it to the manager (nice lady) who thought that as long as the food was in the cabinet it was fine.

I always rummage to the bottom and keep my fingers crossed.

I remember the first christmas I was here, 8 years ago, a famous supermarket had a huge turkey in an OPEN top freezer - the bottom part was frozen but the legs were sticking up above the freezer and were defrosted!!! This was about mid December - hope no-one bought it!!

I would have loved to have bought the smoked fish which was on sale in Lemar, but it was not in the fridge, reading the wrapping, it said 'store below 5o' and sell buy date is april 2012, this is going to give a lot of people serious food poisoning. Hope someone took issue with them.

We have noticed in various supermarkets that frozen food is stored above the "freezer line"

Dig deep, check it out, and hope for the best :-(

It shouldn't have ice crystals in it...

Good luck.

Along with the butter, we also bought a box of luxury chocolates, very attractively packaged, as a present.

Today, after an eventful day, and not having given the present, we decided to open and eat some of said chocolates.

Disaster,- they were stale and looked awful. So, back to the supermarket, taking both butter and chocolates,-saw the manager, who was charming and helpful, and gave us a full refund. We suggested that the other boxes of chocolates are in the same state, with the same sell/by date, and it might be an idea to remove them from the shelves.

Perhaps the supermarkets will adopt the rotation system after reading these posts, in other words put the stuff thawing out on top down to the bottom every now and then

Hi malsancak,

"put the stuff THAWING out on top down to the bottom every now and then"

That would be an absolute disaster,

every frozen item in the shop could've then been partially defrosted.

They would soon run out of customers, literally :-(

Anything that has been partially thawed, then refrozen could be dangerous!

Navek, I know, but this would mean that you'd have few clues that the food had previously defrosted.

hI mal. I only wish that they could grasp rotation and how important it is. Guido is constantly having a word with the manager in starlings and showed him how to do it. To no avail x After reading this posting I have made up a hamper for a charity for their raffle and bought luxury chococolates, now im scared to put them in.
