Has anybody else spotted the exorbiant prices that food purveyours are charging at the boot fairs.

My best is 2.5 Tl for a mince pie.

They must be having a laugh

Hi Hippo I would just like to comment on your posting the blame lies with the person who purchased the goods. They had a choice whether to buy or not. I would ask you to remember that the people that make these products spend time to cook and take things to these boot fairs to give you the chance to buy English home-cooked products that you cannot purchase here, again may I respectfully remind you that you do not have to buy but can go to any store and try and get these products which are usually out of date and are substandard I would also like to remind Tenakoutou that we are not in the UK and ask why do the expats here keep comparing prices with the UK.

Bambi/Msg 3: 'we are not in the UK and ask why do the expats here keep comparing prices with the UK.'

Being a 'Kiwi', I have no idea of UK prices - I was just asking.

I had a trip to Hull, in UK, about 15 years ago and had 'sausage & bacon & mushroom butties' in a cafe on Hessle Road - they were top-notch tucker, and cheap as... !

Hi Roy, doubt that the motive for the pie makers is primarily to please the hungry ex pats. As to your question re. UK prices, you can get 5 fresh warm sausage rolls in Hull centre for a quid.

Think they'd be cold 'n not so fresh if you got 'em sent out.

It's the price of the paperbacks that pees me off but the stalls have to pay for the holders, as me owd dad used to say "a man that'll work for nowt is like a ............................................

What are the prices like in Paphos these days APC? Last time I was there you could get breakfast for next to nothing near the Harbour (but it was rubbish).

Hi there everyone, my daughter has a farm and has her own bakery and farm shop.

She sells HOME MADE sausage rolls made from organic pork which are 8 inches long at 75p so I think there is some overcharging going on.

However, the mincemeat is very expensive there and it is also expensive to make your own, the fruit in the trnc is full of gritty seeds and buying it in the south is also expensive.

Anyway, if you want it, you can always make your own or pay the price for someone else to make it

Personally, I would rather do without!

Bambi. If income is in TL then perhaps no reason to compare prices with sterling. However, if the source of income is all from the UK surely there is every reason to compare prices, and indeed monitor exchange rates, otherwise how else to keep to a budget or know that you are spending wisely ?

Message 15..easy I would have though..exchange all into ytl make yourself a budget and stick with it ! what you do not have you cant spend and what you can its up to you ! Your choice like they say either make your own or buy them..same anywhere..a budget it just that ) I do compare prices just to see if what I want is worth the ytl from my budget more so that what I would spend at home..I am not there !

Personally 3yrs ago we went to the Sat Market and purchased two sausage rolls we both spat them out ! and have not been back i n three years..do not feel the need to either...I enjoy cooking and may get in the mood for Christmas with a little baking, but we are out for lunch..and anyway it will only put the weight ON..AHHH.

Like they say your choice to buy and most go to a great deal of work getting this food for so many that DO WANT IT.

I cant beleive what Im reading, you wanted little britian, people try to bring you what you miss. They spend many hours sourcing products so you get a taste. Go to bells buy frozen and still you moan, are you saying you have now gone into tc mould and eat that way. These people sell out week after week so something is right but as the old addage goes if you cant afford it dont try. You know the cost of things here also the electric costs. You know I dont know why they bother if all you do is slag off. I had friends in Wales who sold their company for 77 million to Grand Met a management buy out happened a year later, now i find their pastys and sausage rolls in bells 8tl for a sausage roll , i wanted it and bought it, a pack of 3 in asda would be 69p. so what they got it here xxx

Well, I cannot condone illegal practices .......I understand why prices are high after taxes and permits, at all the markets advertised on here .".Cooks` Market at the Ozankoy Bookshop "or lambusa ....

If someone goes to the trouble of all this and making a product that is normally unavailable....good luck to them .........do not knock them ...

FYI....

These markets are classed as craft markets so the people who sell there do not need to have work or business permits. Hence the amount of interest. They just pay for the table hire.

If you have a business here selling food you need to get a hygiene certificate you do not need one for the market! Also pies etc should be kept at a certain temperature and although I assume the food gets sold quickly it is still out of the fridge for a while. The health people visiting a restaurant would close them down if food was out of the fridge like that. More so in the summer months.

I think it is a case of buyer beware and if you need to have these items buy them but take the consequences! By the way...a jar of Robertsons mincemeat in Tempo is 4.99tl or the same in the south (Carrefour) 1.99 e. You can make 12-18 very well filled pies with one jar and pastry has a mimimal cost to make. Do the math!!

A fool and his money are soon parted!!!

Hi,

To all the members that have posted on this thread. I don't normally participate in the threads on this forum but in this instance I feel I need to put my point of view as it seems the 2.5tl mince pies are the ones that I make. Hippo you put on a post and then disappear from any more comments, shame. If anyone thinks I do this to earn a living then think again. I do this to give a service for things you can't get here and for the social part as I have many customers and enjoy a chat and a laugh. Just to run all you mislead people through, when making my produce aprons are worn and hair is covered. When completed the food is packed and placed in fridges. At 5pm Saturday mornings they are packed in cool bags, tins and cartons. When laying out my goods they are place on trays covered with paper towels and rubber gloves are worn. Everything is then covered. When the items are sold they are picked up with tongs and placed in covered cartons or bags. I do not sit smoking or touching

Cont:

anything with my hands as my customers will tell you. My mince pies are made with freshly made mincemeat with plenty of Brandy and they are filled to capacity, not out of a jar, I would need several jars to make 18 of my mince pies. Have you nothing better to do all day than to continually slag people off. Lilli I have never met you but thank you for your support and the next time that you are at Lambousa please make yourself known. Bambi you are spot on you don't have to buy. Just think of all the places you eat that hasn't got a generator and a power cut happens, freezers go off, you don't think they throw all that food away do you?. If I go home with anything left my TC neighbours or their workmen benefit. I defend my prices and my goods, I do not speak for anyone else, so unless you have tried my food please keep your comments to yourselves. You never hear the dogs complaining about their biscuits I make.

I was at the "cooks market ozankoy" today and bought 2 of the best scotch eggs i've ever had.

Saw NO problems with storage.

How can anyone complain or question storage issues at these markets when you all buy raw meat from supermarkets. Do you have any idea how this meat has been stored, packed etc?... No!

Think about the mince!

Stop stirring the sh1t.

thank you love, will pop up again to buy my bics and a mincepie to say hi xxxx If any one has not tried them the pies do please and you will agree what you get is worth every penny. Also if you have dogs get these bikkies. Please just remember the work that goes into all the stall holders do here. We are up at 3am baking bread and making fresh pasta, we do care about hygiene, If you see how quickly pies , cakes etc sell out with no reports of food poisoning then someone has got it right.Every food stall I have ever seen there has the shades over their food, gloves on to serve, tongs to pick up etc x

Magymay- Hippo has not disapeared just waiting for you to start the JCB up and dig the hole bigger.

B.....ks- it would take several jars to make the mnce pies i make!!!

If you made them from especially imported items- flown in by your own Lear jet you are still making a handsome profit.

Nobody is doubting the hygine of your domestic kitchen, beuse thats what it is.

And of course you do this just as a hobby?

Now if i was to say-it is not fair for people to do taxi runs because the Taxi drivers lose buisiness

it would be a different

See the the argument then.

So by priducung mince pies you are depriving the owners of the supermarkets thier justly income!!

Come on do you think we all came up the Mersey on a bannanna boat i did my maths as well jar of Robertsons mince meat 7tl add a little local brandy makes about 20 plus mince pies.

I didnt single you out the post was to illistrate generally the overcharging for confectionary at these boot fairs

Not all I may ad

i'm with Hippo on this one............

I'd expect to go to the market and buy home made produce a a much lower price than buying from a shop.........

A quid for a mince pie is taking the p@ss....

Well done to Hippo for a) pointing it out and b) for not buckling when the OP started trying to justify the blatant profiteering....

i'll be avoiding the place like the plague when i'm back..............

Good morning Hippo and Negativenick,

I will put one last post on this thread and then you can pop off and slag someone else off.

Now Girlie's put your nails away. I have not dug myself a hole you have done that for your self. I never once mentioned profit, (can't get the facts right). I do object to your foul mouths, but that says it all. Try the spell check next time and what is a Bannanna boat? As for avoiding the markets that's your choice and certainly no loss to us.

Have a nice day Maggymay

You can always go to Bells and buy a box of Mr. Kiplings, but they taste like cardboard compared to home made ones. If I want to enjoy a mince pie but can't be bothered make them myself then I am willing to pay the price, you pays your money, you takes your choice.
