Lots of restaurants are advertising but who's having their Christmas dinner at home this year?

No disrespect but noone does a better dinner than mine, I've gotta say my gravy is so tasty. I'm not up to cooking the rest of the year but I do pull my finger out on Christmas Day - turkey, carrots, sprouts, leek, cabbage, cauli, brocoli, mashed pots and roasted pots, stuffing, lashings of thick gravy, cranberry and apple sauces on the side - ooh, my mouths watering at the thought!

But ... the dilemma again this year - where can I get a turkey crown? I used to make a Xmas dinner for 15 at a time but now out here there's just the two of us and I don't want to be eating Turkey for the next six weeks so a full turkey is out of the question!!

Thanks.

Lidl also have Ducks in the freezer. Didn't check the price (UK for Xmas!!) but looked meaty.

Has to be better than the dried up, anaemic looking Turkey's they have the bloody nerve to try and flog here (TRNC).

Eating sawdust would be easier and a little cheaper!!!

I know this is a little off subject, but i would like to share a recipe for cooking your turkey, for those who may be a little unsure, with you.

1. turkey 8-15lbs

2. one cup of melted butter

3. salt and pepper to taste

4. one cup of sage and onion stuffing

5. one cup of un-poped popcorn.

Method, brush turkey all over with butter, season with salt and pepper, stuff the cavity with the stuffing and the popcorn.

place turkey into a hot oven 360 degrees with the neck end pointing to the back of the oven.

After about 4 hours, when you hear the popcorn popping and the turkey's arse blows the oven door off and flies across the room

ITS DONE!!!!!! Merry Christmas.

Ironic that turkeys from Turkey are no good. Perhaps pigs from the south of the border would suffer similar fate?

Thanks for all your answers, was just unsure whether anyone was finding Turkey anywhere yet this side of the border.

Shrimp - my recipe: rub your Turkey all over with marg and salt, add chicken stock to the pan and a couple tsp turkey bisto, wrap the turkey in foil then cook slowly for as many hours as it will stand (mum always said 20mins per lb + 20mins!). For the last 1/2 remove the foil to brown off.

Gravy: turkey bisto made up with the stock from the cooked turkey. Salt to taste and lashings of black pepper. Make it thick but pourable - I used to hate going out for a turkey dinner and either there was no seasoning in the gravy or it was thin like water.

Simple but tasty.

However you do yours, enjoy and have a great Christmas.

Thanks Pippie, I normally just cover mine (after pouring a tea cup of water over it to keep it moist) and it works a treat but I am always at a loss how to make good gravy, so I generally buy Marks and Spencers turkey gravy which is tasty but I am sure home made would be better. I am going to try your way, many thanks, have a wonderful christmas and an even better 2011 .....x

If you soak the turkey the night before cooking in heavily salted water and brown sugar rinse off and the use your stuffing etc roast it covered upside down and baste baste baste turn over for the last 30mins it should be lovely and moist.

Hi Shrimp, Deniz has just reminded me, I forgot to say, when you put the turkey in the oven to slow cook the first time, place it 'breast down' so that it is cooked in the juices and remains moist.

When you uncover for the last 1/2 hr, turn it the right way up - carefully, cos by then it'll be ready to collapse!

The Pork Shop opp Starling at Alsancak did turkeys last year - am sure they would do you just a crown if you asked. Fresh, not frozen. (We went for pork for a change, and it was delicious - so moist)

The best Turkey we have EVER tasted came from the pork shop, it was killed 2 days prior to collecting.

It was more expensive than Frozen, But I am not a big fan of food that isn,t fresh. It was worth every penny.

Absolute quality.

Used to have goose every year at christmas in the UK - my first year here too ( some freinds of mine smuggled a whole goose in their suitcase for me !!! )

It is by far the best christmas dinner - not at all greasy if you cook it right!!

Have to agree about cooking the Turkey breast side down. I used a delia receipe one year which said the same. It was the best Turkey I had ever cooked up to that point in time.

I generally find Turkey a bit dry & can be tasteless. I actually prefer roast chicken to Turkey.

Bought a baby goose earlier this year to have it for xmas.Wife and kids got so friendly with her not only they gave her a name but we then bought a male one because (apearenly)it was not fair for the animal to be alone.

Then,I went and bought a baby turkey (Pedro).New neighbours arrived and he was also given a name.So thats out of question.

Lucky I have 19 ducks also with 9 of them being male. They did not have a chance to name them.

flowerfairy, please do NOT try the recipe i posted!!!!!!!!!!!!! It appears that there is a fault with it in some way.

I have nearly scraped all of the turkey meat off my windows in the kitchen now and have just got to repaint the walls, then i can get the oven repaired and all will be back to normal.

I think i will settle for a cheese and onion sandwich on the 25th.

A Merry Christmas and Happy New year to all.
