All wrong (says pedantic himself). It's German and should be used as "das Spiel" = "the game" or "the match". It's usually used when the German Mannschaft (German national football team) wins a football match in the last ten seconds (I hate to say as a Dutchman)...

Hans, not all wrong, I said the same thing (I just forgot to mention I was only talking about speil, not the statement) and also that it means the same in Scottish (now that is pedantic)

Also used to describe a sales pitch, ie. Spielers, the ones that talk at market stalls etc. IE. a salesmans spiel

But I have also understood it to mean a type of speech.

Some Market stalls used to say No Spielers.

The word is Shpiel.

A long sales pitch by a person who wants to sell you on an idea or convince you about what kind of person he is. Usually used for picking up chicks or selling you car insurance.

Googled it and came up with:

Spiel is an American English slang word, or Scots word, referring to a rant or monologue, perhaps of a dishonest or misleading nature.

Etymology

The word has two possible etymologies:

from the Scots word for game, competition, or (sporting)

from a Yiddish language word used in prison culture, an evolutionary stage between rap and hip hop and the earlier chain gang songs influenced by gospel and Afro-Caribbean music.

Collins dictionary says "speech made to persuade someone to do something".
