We were talking about our claim to fame at work today........mine would be that Ravi Shankar came to our house to visit my parents when I was about 14, and I was asked to make him a cup of tea..........it didnt mean anything to me at the time! My father died shortly after so he never returned......More is the pity I am a big fan of his music these days......

Claim to fame? Not a lot - but that is the lot of most of us lot. Both fame and finance have eluded me, but it has been fun trying.

I thought it would be interesting...My husband lived over the road to Diana Doors in Mablehead!!

Hi Shrimp,

my claim to fame is that I made a bouquet of flowers to be presented to HRH Princess Anne. I knew the press officer following the story of her visit. He informed me that even though she is given lots of bouquets, she actually took mine with her to her next venue. I took that as a compliment, and the press coverage did my business proud.

Many years in the Army gave opportunity to meet, be photgraphed with, and sometimes dine with many of the Royal family and other VIPs. However, my fondest memories are that when I was a very young child I had a cricket bat made from a plank, stolen from our garden fence, with which I would play cricket in the street up against the old type gas lights. Dennis and Leslie Compton were born in the next street and would stop when passing to bowl balls to me and give encouragement. In the early 1950s I used to watch Chelsea juniors play on their training ground (behind closed doors) by climbing over the wall and was not evicted as I used to act as ballboy and I was the sole supporter. There played Jimmy Greaves who after every match, in all weathers, never failed to treat me to a 3p (old money) bag of chips at West Hendon Broadway. He was a superb footballer and so modest and kind even when dressed in smart blazer, me in rags. For me, he became the greatest goalscorer who ever lived.

Being asked to host a Karaoke Night in Farnborough, Kent for Shaun Williamson (then, Barry from Eastenders).

He sat and talked to me all night, and we sang the last song together.....

It was, 'I've Had The Time Of My Life' from Dirty Dancing.

We got a standing ovation and I went home on a 'high'......despite the fact that I was suffering with glandular fever !!!

There are two Ashfords and two Richmonds as well as quite a few Kingstons.

How come there is only one Bristol when it should be in pairs.

RE msg 8, sienna: (...) I went to Buckingham Palace and was presented to the Queen and Prince Philip to collect an award. Afterwards Princess Alexandra came to speak to our group and we all had canapes and champagne in the Palace seven royal members were in attaendance (...)

▶ They were born naked like you, didn't grow wings on their back while alive (neither did you) and will die the way you will. So, they are just as special as you are. Stop this medieval attitude to normal people who claim divine support - based on the stupidity of people who escape in fairy tales.

I used to be a Friend of Dulwich Picture Gallery and I was invited to the opening of the new extention being opened by The Queen - I don't how it happened but all of a sudden I found myself standing beside the Queen having our pictures taken.

Oliver Reed used to come down to Devon and stay at a country house hotel near us.....not as a guest, as a friend of the family, for his holiday he liked nothing better than to become a 'normal' person so used to spend his time there washing the floors tending the garden and just blending in...........he even was known to wait at table occasionally!!! This was after he became well known not before he was famous!!

I often meet up with famous people, including Royalty, and we're always on 1st name terms. In my dreams though !! (haven't a clue what all that signifies).

In real life, when in my late teens and living in Nicosia in the '50s, got to know Jackie Trent quite well while she was over there entertaining the troops and performing in cabaret. Always knew she'd be a big singing star. I was also involved on the admin. side (very junior position!) in the final days of the British Colonial Administration's handover of power to the fledgling Republic of Cyprus and during that time met Archbishop Makarios at a special function at Government House. Still in Cyprus - perhaps my greatest claim to fame was being one of the original (i.e. first) British TV announcers with Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation. B/W television then, of course! Even got recognised by a viewer while trying my hand at skiing in Troodos area & dressed in woolly gear! Now that's fame!

I met Bill Clinton at the Hay Festival a few years ago. Several celebrities have holiday homes not far from me and have frequented the local pub including Lionel Bart, Frank Finlay, Viv Phillips (manager of Traffic) and most memorably Steve Winwood who was playing the piano and was told to "get off and let someone decent play" by a knowledgeable local !

When I worked in my Dads music shop met many big groups. Knew Lenny Henry well, he got soaked in my Car one night going through the car wash and the sun Roof leaked

Had drinks with Noddy Holder and other Slade members, Knew Roy Wood and went to court on his behalf.

Met Nyree Dawn Porter,Arthur Lowe, The Iron Lady, Big Jim Sullivan, Mike Harding, Had Tea with the Three Degree's, Also turned down lunch with Linda Lusardi, ( I was too busy) must have been mad.

Met lots of Big stars at my Restaurant, and also many snooker players, and the one who really stood out as one hell of a nice guy was Willy Thorn,

Almost forgot, Also met Barry Snakes, and sang with Danny Fisher.

Claim to fame seems to be having met or had contact with famous/infamous people...so....I once met Mike Harding in a bar in Manchester waaay back in the early 80's; chatted with cricketing types such as Gary Sobers, Clive Lloyd, Hansie Cronje and suchlike by being a member of a Central Lancashire League Cricket Club; played snooker with Stan Milburn (recently deceased uncle of Jack and Bobby Charlton); had dinner twice with the Sultan of Oman (along with hundreds of others); met and chatted with George Melly after a concert; met Ian Douglas Smith ( Good ol' Smithy from Rhodesia); got ordered off the road as Robert Mugabe was passing!!! That's enough and all I can remember at the mo!

We lived in a village a few hundred yards from Delia Smith. Most of the villagers were Ipswich supporters. Every time Norwich City were beaten the villagers used to put up a sign saying "Welcome home to Suffolk Delia" The telling thing for me was that after the filming of her television episodes showing her preparing lots of meals in the conservatory of her cottage she used to send the film crew to the village pub for something to eat !

Many years ago, when I was just a teenager, my friend and I skipped school and headed off for Liverpool to try to find The Beatles, we eventually found the houses of John, Paul and George and got all of their autographs. John Lennon lived with his Aunt then and he spent ages standing outside the house talking to us, a really lovely person.

Saddened that Dutch seems to be again crusading from post to post to lay his bile and jealousy upon anyone he seems to identify as having exceeded his worth in this world when he should be applauding Sienna. I had the privilege of being in a New Year's Honours List and I fully understand why Sienna should enjoy the glow of receiving recognition for something which must have brought benefit for many and was preceded by a lot of devotion and hard work. To know that superiors and colleagues have made such a nomination to the Queen gives a wonderful sense of being part of a team and gives more power to the elbow. Heartiest congratulations Sienna. Dutch, if you strife for recognition, go to Holland, cut off an ear, and stick your finger in a dike ! (and perhaps your tongue as well) :(

During the Cold War, stationed here in Cyprus on a missile base, we needed to test the acquisition parameters on a fast moving target, scanning the skies in hope, we never found one, until one day Concord appeared on a special test run and we tracked her live over the Gulf with 8 Bloodhounds locked on.....apart from that, sharing a lift with Dianne Keaton, and sitting in a theatre 2 seats away from Jeremy Irons....sad I know....

Worked at Webely Stadium during Live Aid, both back and front stage, met quite a few of the performers. What a fantastic day everyone had. Just thinking about it brings back some brilliant memories. Oh to be young again, Or should I say younger.

My years in the ambulance service in suffolk as a paramedic gave me the opportunity to meet most of the royal family when they landed in the royal helicopter, and a few pop stars at portman road football ground in Ipswich, like Phil Collins and Tina Turner. I am not saying this was a claim to fame, but it was an experience when I took Moira Hindley to hospital from highpoint prison in suffolk when she became ill.

Jonkay, can you let Lewis Hamilton know I'll be at the Turkish Grand Prix in May, and that I'm in the market for a racing driver?

I once spat out some foul crab paste-type stuff on a table cloth in front of Liam Gallagher at a party. I didn't know he was watching. He laughed and walked off. Fair play.

I appeared on stage with Robbie Williams and pushed him over.

It was before he found fame and was starring in the stage show 'Oliver' as the 'Artful Dodger. I was a member of the chorus of boys.

I met Betty Turpin (Coronation Street - Bettys Hotpots) Twice in the cash and carry. (She said both times I must be having a big bbq, invited her both times) Very nice lady. Also let Ken Barlow out of asda car park once and he waved at me in thanks.

I've also had Judy Finnigan watching me play solo on a steel drum before an ITV Charity thing years ago.

My mum sat at a table in a restaurant next to Mike Baldwin once.

All totally pathetic I know. ;-)

LaptaMike - When you mentioned your Mum it reminded me of when my Mum was a taxi driver and Lady Betjeman used to ring her up and ask her to take her home complete with her pushbike up into the hills where she lived. She could cycle down but not back up !

You have put me in the pale!!

I have only been friends with George Best, Van Morrison and the very brave Brian Keenan, all before they were famous. And strangely enough my friend's sister is married to Terry Waite.

Blackpoolfan, other chums of mine who have homes in TRNC are John Taylor ( Lord Killclooney ) & the brillaint Ken Maguiness ( Lord Maguiness )

Went to the same school as Reginald Dwight (Elton John) and to the same tennis coaching class. Been dining at the same time as the late Diana Dors, Jimmy Saville (and his mum), and Lisa Goddard and family at hotel restaurants in Surrey. Met Sol Campbell and Tom Sellick in the rooftop restaurant of the Burj Dubai.

Actually I have met lots of very well known people, and it really does not phase me in anyway, because they are no different to you and I, some are good some are not so good, Lenny Henry turned out to be a not very nice person, several of us who had grown up with him, met him at various shows etc. in later life,

He blanked us and denied knowing us. Talk about forgetting your roots.

Jan and I have met and spent several hours with little Ismail. Now he really is one bright Star and alittle Hero.

well said lee.xxx Parkview I will tell you all about it when i see you next, also cliff, tom boy we lived next door . I should write a book. Many years ago I was asked by the Sun Newspaper to spill the beans on a very famous footballer, they offered 35k. When I gave the hack a bit of my tongue and a call to my companies lawyer he backed off. This guy was my best friend for 30 years, how would I sell him out. They funny thing was they all thought it was me he was having the affair with. When I called him he said take the money, all the others do, what price do you put on friendship xxxxxxx
