Marketplace Safety Tip

Pay with PayPal. It's the easy and fast way to pay online, and it lets you shop without sharing your financial details with sellers. PayPal also offers up to £500.00 of free purchase protection on qualified eBay purchases. Terms and conditions apply.

Keep your money safe - never pay for items with cash or instant money transfer services, such as Western Union or MoneyGram. In the past some sellers have exploited these payment methods in order to defraud buyers, so eBay has banned them from the site.

Don't forget to pay your seller. A bid is a binding contract and, unless the item has been ended by eBay, you're obliged to pay the seller for that item.

I had this once but chose to ignore the e-mails that were sent to me requesting that I send the item that they had 'won' through Buy It Now. You have to look very closely at the e-mails, I found spelling mistakes etc. But I have to hand it to eBay though, their systems realized a fraud was taking place and removed my item (a Cartier watch) from the listing. However, I still received e-mails telling me to send the watch to Nigeria. Do these silly Nigerian people think that they can get away with it???

Thanks for the warning Nige. I must admit I've USUALLY had no problems with Ebay...did have one slightly iffy incident last year but luckily I got my money back.

It's always good to be in the know though, so cheers again.

HI all,

So can you buy stuff on Ebay and get them sent to NC? That would be a bonus as I'm a bit of an ebay addict and was wondering how I'll cope without it!

Hi Maggie& B

My son livs in Denmark and is an Ebay Fan, sellers will not accept any currency

so basicly you have to have a UK address and a Mum who pays till whenever.

Ah I see! oh well never mind - the sunshine will compensate - when I think of it I sit here buying c**p on ebay when the weather is too bad to be out in the garden so in sunney NC I won't need it.

I have that MP3 to tape thing for you Nige, and I'll be there 1 week tomorrow - woopee! Let me know where you may be on the Sun or Mon and I'll find you.

Just something I find useful when receiving the masses of spam like this.

Hover over the url link which is always included and check in the bottom left hand corner of your screen. It should give the actual pathname of where you will end up. If it doesn't look right then copy and paste the link into the url bar at the top of your page. Better still never follow links in pages unless you are certain of the destination.

Hi Nige, Sorry to hear about your bad luck. I received emails supposedly from e-bay saying that I had won goods and they needed to verify my details, I hadn't even bid on goods so it was a surprise to me. The only contact I had had with e-bay was LOOKING at items, yes, I have bought in the past with no problems but nowadays you have to be very careful before opening up emails. All of my Hotmail account and contact details was stolen a few months ago. Yes, it does happen, messages in my follders, the lot. My contacts received emails supposedly from me selling things. Luckily nearly everyone realised that the emails looked dodgy and not something from me and never opened them up. Just be on your guard Nige.
