Foreign Minister Hüseyin Özgürgün has responded to statements made by the Greek Cypriot Foreign Minister Markos Kiprianu criticizing the Turkish Side’s stance at the talks. He said that the Greek Cypriot Side’s statements, which came at a critical period in the negotiations process, were part of a deliberate campaign aimed at poisoning the political atmosphere in the process.

Foreign Minister Özgürgün reminded that the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon had urged both sides in Cyprus to refrain from issuing statements accusing or blaming each other.

Explaining that the Greek Cypriot Side was concerned about the UN Secretary General taking on a more active role in the negotiations process with the aim of creating momentum in the process, he said the Greek Cypriot Side thus tried to provoke the

Cyprus Turkish Side through blackmailing, in an effort to prevent any positive progress from taking place.

The Foreign Minister once again laid emphasis on the Cyprus Turkish Side’s demand towards achieving a fair, sustainable and comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem.

“The Cyprus Turkish Side will continue to work for a solution, bearing in mind the ‘natural timetables’ as referred to in Ban’s Good Offices Mission report” he noted.

Özgürgün also pointed out that Cyprus Turkish people needed to be reassured that they would not once again pay the price of a non-solution in Cyprus as they did following the Annan Plan.

The TRNC Foreign Minister also underlined the need for the international community to acknowledge the fact that the Greek Cypriot Side was hiding behind its international recognition to realizing its ill intentions of spreading its sovereignty to the whole of Cyprus and to lower the status of Cyprus Turks to that of a minority.

It's about time someone called a halt to these talks. They are going round in circles. Lets all get on with our lives in the knowledge that we are all happy as it is.

All very well, No1Doyen; but, how much longer is Turkey prepared to carry her 'pet lame duck', even though, in monetary terms, the seemingly enormous 'contribution' is only a 'p1ss in the bucket' when viewed from the angle of Turkey's annual domestic tax take?

While the embargo remains in force, it will be impossible to trade by normal standards, even if the TRNC had the exportable wherewithal and business expertise to do so - which it doesn't!

The adverse publicity gained by the government's failure to address the very problems that have largely caused the demise of the real estate trade will only become apparent to the 'rich club' when they start to 'feel the pinch'; which, if inflationary living costs continue to spiral, may be sooner than they think. Then what?

TK,

Turkey wants to be rid of the burden of north Cyprus hence its support for the peace plan. The question is how long before Ankara puts arms behind backs in Lefkosa.
