Lucy is a white cross greyhound bitch around 6 years old, fully spayed and with EU Passport. Her elderly owners have been taken ill and had to return to UK and cannot take Lucy. She is at present here at K9. If you can give her a permanent home please contact me.

Will she have a Happy Christmas?

Hi Bob. No, if a dog has EU passport then no quarantine required in uk providing all rabies jabs etc up to date. They do however have to go back via an EU country. Contact KAR or us for more details. Penny

....does she need a lot of exercise...(being part greyhound) etc etc....

I do hope you have luck re-homing her.

More info re Lucy. See pic

She is wonderful with people and other male dogs but dislikes bitches. Fully housetrained and comes on command. Can clear gates and fences. She has a wonderful sense of humour and smiles and talks. Lucy came from Bogaz area and has had several homes already she needs something more stable and permanent. She really is an elegant looking dog but don't think I would recommend a family with children.

Hope this helps. P

I simply don't understand that if there are NO quarantine costs the other end; we all know flights via the Greek side are cheaper - and this elderly couple clearly can afford their own flights and removal costs - plus one doubts they are providing for children or paying a mortgage now - why they can't arrange for her to be taken back to UK where they can guarantee Battersea or some other organisation will re-home her and there is 90% less chance she will end up with a family that can't cope with her needs and she will end up YET another feral animal. If they are both? too ill to arrange this, having lived here, they would know someone who could make the arrangments regarding her flight, for them.

Hi Penny...back to top. Please, please, please help. There are ten wonderful dogs at K9. I rescued 2 myself in August and they have been staying with Penny and Phil ever since, sadly we are about to lose one of them to ill health. He will be leaving his best friend "Buddy" without a mate. Can anyone out there give any of these beautiful dogs a forever home? God bless little Yogi xx

msg 4.delikomsu.

I do believe that you are giving false hope with regard to the laws on quarantine in the UK.Having been in the position of bringing a rescued animalfrom the TRNC back to the UK through the quarantine system I have had numerous conversations with DEFRA regarding the unfair treatment of animals going to the UK from Cyprus. The UK government only reconises Cyprus as one island therefore animals should be allowed to enter the UK the same as those from the South .However when it has been declared that the animal was in the North then they reconise the North of the island as the TRNC, a third world country not included in the EU passport scheme. For any animal that has been in a country not reconised as part of the EU passport scheme ,that animal on re-entering a country that is reconised must complete 6 months quarantine, that includes the ROC or France. If you want clear clarification ring DEFRA ,although sympathetic their hands are tied.

Hi Barnaclebill, we can only speak from experience here as we are trying to get as many dogs off this island as possible. Yes, it is possible to take dogs to UK without quarantine we have done it. If they have an EU passport and they travel via another EU country then there is no 6 months quarantine. Anyone who wants to do this can contact us for more details. Penny k9 kennels.

The PETS scheme

The scheme is designed to stop the spread of rabies and other diseases while still allowing pets to travel.

The UK has been free of rabies for many years, but mammals are still at risk in some other countries. All rabies-susceptible animals entering the UK have to spend six months in quarantine, unless they arrive under and meet all the conditions of PETS.

Most European Union (EU) countries and many outside the EU have joined PETS. You can check details and the full procedure for preparing your pet on the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) website.

To be eligible, your cat, dog or ferret must:

first be fitted with a microchip

then be vaccinated against rabies

wait 21 days from the date of their first rabies vaccination before travelling to another European Community country

not have visited any non-approved countries or territories for at least six months before they enter or re-enter the UK

Delikomsu

The above was taken from the DEFRA website .I think the last sentence is the most important one,the TRNC being a country that does not qualify.I am only bringing it to your attention as the consequences of smuggling a dog into the UK carries a death penalty for the animal and a hefty fine/imprisonment for the owner.

I think you are misunderstanding totally and I am fully aware of the DEFRA rules. I am saying that dogs here that have a fully up to date EU passport with rabies vaccs, serum lab tested report, tick/flea control/dewormer, microchip etc are able to travel LEGALLY to UK via EU. Nobody is suggesting smuggling dogs as this is completely out of order. Any dogs we send from here are completely vaccinated and legal, why do you have a problem with this barnaclebill?

Delikosmu,

I have no problem with what you do all I am doing is making people aware of the DEFRA rules.I completley agree with what you written in Msg26, however that applies to a dog moving from one EU country to another. You are advocating that a dog even though it may have all the neccesssary paperwork can move from a country not recognised under the pets passport scheme into one which has the scheme in force .That port of entry would have to enforce the 6 month Quarintine rules. When i brought my pet back I tried to get her back through the ROC,I was told she would have to spend 6 months in quarintine there ,I opted to bring her back to the UK.Believe me I do hope you get as many of those poor animals back, which have been caught up in the politics of a divided Island free from quarintine like there counterparts in the South.I also think that a lot more people would bring their animals with them if the same rules applied to the TRNC as does the ROC.

Update on Lucy. Her owners came back last week to say goodbye and paid for her kenneling until end of February. They are very sad that they cannot take her and together we are actively looking for a new permanent home.

Lucy's owners rang yesterday to see if there was any progress with re-homing but unfortunately not yet. We at k9 always keep in contact with owners but if they cease to communicate we keep the dog here for one month after fees have expired and after that we reluctantly have it put to sleep. Lucy's owners do not want her destroyed and neither do we as she is such a beautiful dog and a real character! We'll all keep trying.

Hi both, no, Lucy is still here, hoping to hear from her owners soon but no offers of a home yet.

Another stray pointer has been dumped at our gate this week with a smashed back leg and baler twine tight round its neck, trying desperately to catch it but can't get anywhere near it's so frightened. Shame on them!!!
