There have been a few post recently that have described Cyprus as “Devils Island”. Having just educated myself as to “Devils Island” (yes via Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devil's_Island ) I personally I think the name is harsh.

So what do you think the Island should be called and why?

yep - the link just about sums the place up.................

in 4 years of living in the TRNC - the most poinient thing i heard came from that Scottish bird up the Tumbar, who said:

"we've all been conned"

And un-believable how estate agents could convince 10,000 plus brits to part with their hard earnt cash for shoddily built properties on land that was stolen at gun point in a country with a legal system that has more in common with a Laurel and Hardy film than a UK Court.....................

And if that wasn't enough its too friggin hot to do anything in July / Aug and bleedin freezin in yer villa between Nov & April..............

Still - look on the bright side - it can only get better................

What about all the bleedin' builder's rubble dumped everywhere ? and the beaches with litter thrown everywhere ?

i'm stopping now - makes my blood boil !

Would we have given it to them, if we'd have known how it has ended up ?

My vote - NO !

Years ago, in the South, Cyprus was known as 'Little Sicily' - I wonder why???!!!

Nobody can disagree with 'Negnik's summation - if they do, then they urgently need to go for a full medical and psychological check-up!

No Devils Island here... http://www.northcyprusonline.com/North-Cyprus-Online-Ancient-Names.php

Do all 10,000 people that Negnik talks about (post 2) agree with him? Have we all been coned?

I am not saying people have not lots have and I am very sorry for their plight BUT have we all (or should I say will we all)?

Theres as many good stories as bad regarding property, yes standards may not be what we expect but when buying in a third world corrupt enviroment one must rely on ones nouse to to get the deal you want , if your use to dealing with lying coniving 2 faced tossers you will normaly come out ok, if not expect to be crapped on from a great height. Ok the place is like a tip but one must remember its still a third world ghetto ran by what is no better than a bunch of Somali pirates. We must look to the future, change will come, yes at a price, and at the cost of TC's local identity, but Devils Island will be transformed into that Las Vegas in the Med, I will have enjoyed my stay until that time, made some half decent dosh and feel sure theres worse places out there.

I apologise to write in this mainly moaning thread that I enjoy every day here. I can never return to TRNC and its population what I receive(d). Maybe if some people here would grow and have some interest in TRNC instead of playing and expecting "Little Britain" they might have more pleasure living here also.

mess 11 - Dutch you are on planet ZOGG old boy..................

The daily "cut and past" drivel that you bung on here is about as interesting as a Skandanavian credit card evening round Garry Monger's house..............

If you carefully read message 2 again, you'll see that it's actually true - but instead you have a go "for the sake of having a go" - i've noticed over the last 12 months you've targeted many folk on here and hounded the hell out of them with your bee in your bonnet.....

If life's so perfect in your shoddily built villa, with dubious deeds and you are so short sighted you cannot see all the shite dumped everywhere - then the very best of luck to you - your life in good old Holland must have been dreadful, that's all i can say.................................

I'm awarding Dutch the Neg Nick "vindictive poster of the year" award - well done...................

NN, your negative input on this board is only aimed to spoil - won't work with me. If you don't like it here, beat it. And don't pollute this board with your primitive posts without ever being helpful or informative. Steal-a-joke-a-day and post them on a board in The Philippines.

Here we go again...Usual situation, threads pulled off topic by clowns more interested in demonstrating their capacity for denigration than contributing.

Simplistically we have a world in two parts-

a) nice and safe for those timid who want perfection and consistency, low risk and everything that goes along with a modern western country that has "arrived". It's called live-anywhere-in-the-EU.

b) The frontier countries, developing, uncertain, scruffy, risky,

The problem occurs when a person better suited to a, gets involved with b, and can't get back to safe ground.

It's heaven for us adventurers who are prepared to rough it in some areas for the multitude of benefits in other ways.

I do wish that the people who came here and are unhappy for whatever reason could return to their "before" situations, and be replaced with those who know what they are going into.

Everyone would be happy then

Of course we have to take on board those people that give the impression of wearing rose coloured specs, but really know the score. However take advanatage by quietly maximising there own profits !!

Pipie,

I wouldn't think anyone today living in the TRNC has rose coloured spectacles on, or anyone from any country who wants to invest there, and if anyone wants to be a Cowboy or Indian in the wild west like Tony E, Good Luck! three wheels on your wagon hey Tony! hope you have a good foundation for the future you can have the scuffy, risky, complete with scams, along with your own adventure, just like Indiana Jones, I'll tip my honest straight hat to you!

Whether or not you consider the TRNC "A corner of the World touched by Heaven "depends to a great extent on where you come from..If you come from an inner City, then anywhere is preferable, personally I consider it to be "Potentially Attractive"ie;I don't consider Rubbish everywhere, poor infrastructure, Draconian Laws, and crooked legal systems anything more than you would expect in the "HOT PLACE"...So for me "Devils Island at the moment is an accurate ,(all be it harsh )description....

I agree totally with what Hans says in Message 11. I wouldn't choose to live anywhere else. For me it is perfect and I love it here. It's my home. (and before anyone starts, I said it is perfect for 'me').

Read the comments with interest feeling sorry for those who have had a hard time and not enjoying things and excited and happy for those who are positive.

For me I think it is all about how you see it:-

“I see skies of blue and clouds of white

The bright blessed day, the dark sacred night

And I think to myself, what a wonderful world”

I could say

“I see plastic bags and builders rubbish

The efis bottles and the broken promise”

The place is far from perfect yes; but I think to myself what a wonderful world because I can let me kids enjoy playing outside without worrying, I don’t fear for my wife when she walks home in the dark, the sky is blue (most of the time) and the people are great. Just my perspective. As for a name "just right for me".

swaney there is all that and more, i love it when i see kids playing with simple toys, walking from school on their own. Not in a yummy muumy car dropping kids off. these kids we see on the way to and from school always wave to me. Now above the restaurant we have had a family move into one of the flats, the little boy Kamil always comes into see me to tell me the english word he has learnt that day, he shows me his book and i tell him new words to go to school with. his mum and dad god love them try so hard to speak with me. They keep bringing me food. Now where apart from Ireland would I get that. All for the love and innoncence from one little boy. They are from the mainland but so very kind. I cant ask for more , that little lad makes my day when he says liz how are you today, i reply then it comes very well thank you xxxxxxxxxxxxx

For me the TRNC is a beautiful place and a joy to live in, we are probably luckier than many in that we came with our eyes wide open many years ago loved the place so returned every 2 years until we bought a resale property six months ago and decided to move here almost permanently but we kept a home in England too, having read the posts of Nick, he comes across as a bit of a know it all know nothing kind of a person who had a bad experience here, probably lost his wife to a smarter more lovable person, and she turfed him out so he lost his home his respect and everything else into the bargain, so is now in a new found short term shangrila and is going to bad mouth everything about the TRNC.

By the way there is muck and rubbish everywhere even in good old England and I dont need rose tinted specs to see that, nor do I need them to see through some phoney people

Can never understand why so many people knock TRNC. We hear all the ex pats moaning about the immigrants that move to UK and refuse to conform to accepted UK custom and practice. Is that not we are doing, trying to change here to be like there, instead of changing us to be more like these. If I ever win the lottery I'll buy the biggest and best place I can, here. When family and friends in Eire ask what it's like here, I tell them it's like home, but sunny. Got an e mail today from a cuz in Roscommon complaining about the snow and asking if he can visit with the family. Can't wait for them to get here and can promise one thing they won't here from me, any apologies. Not about this lovely place and people, anyway.

As an add on - we have been here six years and this is the first continuous period of six years in my adult life that ...

We have not been either burgled, had the car broken into, or been mugged

We can walk anywhere at any time without feeling threatened, and have nice neighbours too,

Who can complain at that !

CYPLUS - everything there is plus us - but for some reason this post got dropped - is this controversial or did it just get lost in the system?
