we've decided its too cold to come back to the TRNC on 18th...........................

So, having sold up everything here in Thailand - Me, Ting Tong, Garry Monger and Garry Monger's missus are off later today to live Manilla in tut Fillapines, for 12 months...........

Maybe TRNC in 12 months time ?? who knows...............

Be interesting to see where the TRNC is then...................

Don't know much about Philippines, but just looked it up on Wikipedia. Looks beautiful in parts, but Manilla looks a bit built up for my taste. Let us know what its like!! Bon voyage......

I was in the Philippines earlier this year. On the plus side it is cheap, English is widely spoken, it is beautiful in parts (but not Manila) and Christian (so they celebrate Christmas). On the down side it is hard to be comfortable among so much poverty (far worse than Thailand) and the crime rate is truly horrendous. I was in several places on several islands but couldn't get used to the armed guard at every bank, every petrol station and every 7/11 store. Nearly every house has a 10ft+ high wall topped with razor wire. When they fill the ATM there are 6 or more armed guards. What is most frightening is that these guys aren't exactly trained to the standards of UK firearms officers - I wouldn't want to be anywhere in range if they started shooting.

Unlike Thailand, foreigners can own property in the Philippines - only I wouldn't want to.

NN, I think I recall reading quite a bit from you at various times about how much lovlier Thailand was than TRNC.

The obvious question here, then, is why did you sell up and move out??

Is the 'Manilla' you are removing to the same place as 'Manila' (with one 'l') - have read much about that place - very busy, very crime-ridden, very beautiful, English spoken by many people, very corrupt.

What an adventure. Twelve more months for us and then if no change, move on, possibly Thailand.

Had a few weeks there over Chinese New Year a few years back - even searched my handbag for a gun when we went into a bar, in Manila. Security guards in Macdonalds with great russian type guns - oooh!! Found life on the smaller islands much better - so got a boat and sailed (away) off to one of them for the rest of the stay, bliss!!

Whilst some of your "anti" TRNC postings lest a lot to be desired, I do admire your sense of adventure, and the drive to make it happen for you, which deserves to be commented positively on..

Too many poeple bleat about their unhappy lot and do nothing about it, nice to see a breakaway made from the norm. So, I do wish you all the best, if there is a forum out there where life is described, please make a posting here so we can find it.

Best regards

As someone already mentioned, why are you leaving Thailand if you don't mind me asking. I was seriously considering moving out there for a while next year. I have been before so have some idea of life there, but maybe different when you actually live there? Been looking at Hua Hin?

NN - am really surprised at your choice of Manila given the crime rate there - stay safe.
