I have been using Limewire to download free /songscds/music etc but have been told that it is renowned for spam/hacking/viruses etc. Can anyone reccomend a free safe reliable site to use instead of Limewire. Thanks.

Or you might consider paying for what you download? What incentive is there for artistes to produce new music when every Tom Dick and Harry is happily nicking it? Don't bother with the old "well if they made it cheaper etc etc" Theft is Theft!

If you have good antivirus software then Limewire shouldn't be a problem. However, try ISOHUNT.COM, BITORRENT.AM or THEPIRATEBAY.ORG - for all these you will need to download and install the 'utorrent' software from http://www.utorrent.com. Most of the stuff on these torrent sites is huge compilations of hundreds (even thousands) of tracks - however, 'utorrent' lets you select only the tracks you want before downloading. Yenibob Most of the music I download is stuff I've had for years on vinyl or cassette - I don't go for the modern music. So I've paid one lot of royalties and don't feel guilty about getting it in a now more convenient format.

I bought a TV from Tesco some time ago, it's not in use at the moment so will it be OK for me to pop back there and take another one? Come on people, steal if you must, but at least be honest to YOURSELF.

I agree, Jovial John. As much as it's right to call it theft on the one hand, on the other hand every industry is affected by the introduction of new technology - it's just the nature of the beast. For example, journalists losing their jobs when the newspapers started folding, miners out of work when the pits closed etc. However, saying that, I would be more than prepared to pay higher prices to see bands perform live if I could have the actual music for free, so perhaps the industry should look at other ways of making money, and just use the music itself as an advertisement. I, like many people, have paid lots to watch bands live after downloading their music for free. If I hadn't checked out their music for free initially then I would never have become a fan and paid to go to the gig in the first place. The internet caused, and is still causing, huge changes for many industries, and for every job or amount of money lost because of it, more jobs and money are being created by it

Don't expect it to happen, but thought it worth raising. Easy to justify theft if everyone else appears to be a thief. Johndp, where do you live mate? There are a few things I need and as this is a lawless society I thought I might as well just take yours. What do you reckon?

yenibob - I am not a Tom nor a Dick nor a Harry - I am not interested in new artist incentives - i think they get plenty of that as it is ! Do they all consider the effect the images they portray, their videos and the lyrics they sing have on young inpressional minds ?? I doubt it ! All i wanted was somewhere to download some cheesy old songs and some corny Christmas carols for a Charity party - you are a bah humbug ! Thank you everyone else for you advise - think of me when i am bopping away with my octogenarian mates to my STOLEN music ----- Agadoo do do + Birdy song etc ha ha.

yenibob, I'm guessing you might be a musician... If so, would you rather no one paid for your music and therefore no one ever heard it? Or would you rather your gigs were sell-outs because people had heard your music for free and then spread the word?

Hang on, my last post didn't make sense! I meant, would you rather everyone had to pay for your music, thereby running the risk of no one being prepared to and therefore no ever hearing your music...? Sorry!

I might try that with Jaguar " Would you rather everyone had to pay for your cars, thereby running the risk of no one being prepared to buy your cars and therefore not knowing how good the cars are? Seems like a winner to me. Do you think it might work with laptops?

I like the approach they're taking in France where fans can get more involved with their favourite bands. As a band starts, fans can invest money int he band and they then get a return on investment. Some guy invested about 10k in such a band, and now that this band is huge, he's had a 10fold ROI. As for illegal downloads, wasn't me who just finished downloading the 500best R&B tracks of all time...honest

I use http://www.btjunkie.org and have never had any problems using this site. As far as the 'THEFT' accusations - is it really that different to recording the top 40 on radio 1 in the 80's and then playing the cassette back? It's just in today's world it's computers and MP3 players etc. instead of tape recorders! G

"What incentive is there for artistes to produce new music when every Tom Dick and Harry is happily nicking it?" Bob I have never in all my years heard a musician state that money was their muse and taping, copying and downloading will stop them from making music.... Your mojo has very little to do with money.... Now the record industry, poor things, they'd love you to believe that musicians won't write good music unless you pay through the nose for it.... but we all know differently don't we? As it happens, I believe the opposite is true and musicians love the idea of their craft being appreciated by the masses and don't really give a shit how it got there. You obviously have a bee in your bonnet about copyright theft... I've always found it a very ambiguous area of ownership as once a piece is broadcast it's in the public domain. The music and film industry has managed to protect it's revenue stream with more vigour than just about any other art form. cont...

I'd be more inclined to side with the music industry if the spoils were more evenly distributed but so many bands are ripped off by their management and record companies that I am fairly ambivalent to the plight of the music industry which by the way is making more money for big business than ever....

Spot on, Groucho. Might I also add, yenibob (sorry to make it sound personal, which it isn't; it's just that you do seem to be very against the idea of downloading music for free), that I was a live music promoter for a while in the place I lived before I moved here, and not one of the bands I promoted had a problem with me giving their music away for free in order to advertise their gigs. In fact, the record companies and booking agents themselves actively sent me stacks of free copies to help in getting punters down to the gigs.
