I've had problems in the past, it seems to be at Nationwide end and usually ok next day but a bit worrying at the time. They are probably doing some kind of systems maintenance.

I have had a Flex account and have encountered no problems accessing my account - I am closing it down due the the changes to the benefits and services it offered people abroad.

I have been informed by Nationwide that they are in the process of updating their web site and all customers will be required as an added security measure to put their cards in the chipped reader and enter your pin number to access their web site.

If people are starting to experience problems this may be the reason, especially if you are in Cyprus does the chip reader work there ?

Thanks for all your helpful comments - I have no problem withdrawing sterling with my Nationwide debit card - no charge for withdrawing sterling - the problem is when I try to check my account balance. However if the problem persists I'll contact Nationwide.

Don't be too quick to dump your Nationwide Account, it seems that hadn't really thought through their implementation of changes for use abroad and drawing Sterling out does not attract a charge.

As Groucho has said, the Nationwide has not really thought out the implementation of their new cash withdrawal charging. I have pointed out the errors in their web site information and asked for clarification, but it appears from Cyprus44 members that Nationwide are not charging for sterling withdrawals using a FlexAccount debit card from ATM's, but will charge 2% + £1 non UK ATM fee for withdrawals in Turkish lire. Will post any reply I receive from Nationwide.

You can withdraw sterling from the Turkish Economy Bank (TEB) next to Mr Pound too - not so easy to park though.
