Hi DC I have just been watching the weather in Europe and only remarked to your italian friend about Hollands falling temperature's. At least they may be more geared up for it than the uk seem to be.

DC

I finally escaped the cold weather in Scotland last Monday and arrived at Schipol airport (spelling apologies) in Amsterdam to see the snow falling.

Bill, I heard on Dutch radio: minus 10 in the day time (OK, I know the UK was worse, but "we is much smaller"...).

Hans

Is there not an ice skating race on the frozen canals weather conditions permitting which is very rare?

RE msg 14, Brinsley: Yes, there is. It's called "De Elfstedentocht" (The Eleven Towns Tour) - the distance to skate is 200 km. And indeed, it's "weather permitting", so seldom done. During my lifetime it only happened four or five times. The winner, after many, many hours of skating and "kluning" (crossing roads on skates from one canal to another) is a lifetime hero. Only 200 of the best Dutch long distance skaters are allowed to subscribe. Thousands of lesser quality skaters skate the tour also (6am to 11 pm!), but many have to give up. Every "Elfstedentocht" has many victims in the always very cold, windy weather in open polders: frozen noses, frozen toes and frozen fingers often have to be amputated. 80 Percent of the Dutch population will stay at home to watch this monster tour on TV.

I know it ain't cricket but for Dutch people it's the Mother of all Sports!

Here's something about "De Elfstedentocht" in English. Unfortunately it's bad news for the time being (I think!):

Here are picture of this very difficult race for only the very best athletes:

Perhaps we are going back to the "Ice Age"? It sure feels like the Gulf Stream has moved somewhere.......
