Hi could anyone please tell me if they know where to buy a rain butt or something equivalent as i'm going to try and make use of some of the rain we are no doubt due to get over the next few months!

Water tanks will be too large as it will be going on my drive.

Also any other suggestions appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Simon,

When we were out in October, they had rain butts at Marshalls Esentepe but they were expensive.

Anywhere that sells goods in barrels - that are perhaps decanted elsewhere, in shops for instance - would be a place to ask to buy one.....

Hi skeeds,

This is such an obviously good idea I can't understand why it's the first time I've seen it mentioned. In Australia we are no strangers to rain-water tanks, and given Cyprus is so dry it really seems a no-brainer.

If your tank must go on your drive, and one of the standard 3- or 5-ton tanks would not fit, could you build one yourself in a convenient place? Customise it so to speak. They work well made from cement, aluminium, steel, fibreglass or even heavy duty plastic. They can be any shape.

Rottolover says it all you can buy rain-water tanks everywhere in Perth at reasonable prices, in all shapes and sizes, we are about to have a very hot Christmas this year 38deg and it's been one of the driest in history, our dams are around 31% full so we need rain badly.

We thought of this when we first came out but there is a downside - it's a perfect breeding ground for mosquitos if you cannot ensure that it is completely sealed. Obviously, the style that take water from a down pipe are no use as the mossies can access the butt.

Hi Simon,

The rain butts at Marshalls were between £200 - £300 each. some were slightly larger than others

Actually it's not, skeeds. There'd probably only be 10 million or so rainwater tanks in Australia fed by downpipes, and mosquito breeding grounds don't seem to be a problem.

Do people have much experience with rainwater tanks in England, aylin?

Is not the problem in Cyprus that:

The rain falls pretty much only at one time of year, so you can't continually catch and use, meaning the barrel will be empty for most of the year.

And, with mains water at about 1tl/ton, a £20 barrel will take 46tons of re-used water to start to make any saving.

Not worth having them around I would say, only time the barrel will be full is when it's raining anyway.

The issue isn't about saving money, vrret, it's about saving water...

Please dont go near this idea.

I have seen a water butt outside a villa that is only used a few weeks a year and it was literally full of mossie offspring (not sure of the right word)

So the good intentioned Brit will have a butt installed and the lid will no doubt disappear, leaving all those living in the vicinity covered in bites form the millions of offspring.

A definate one for the bin.

I just don't understand this thing about mosquitoes, the rainwater tanks are inclosed and we use the rainwater to run our toilets, washing machines, to drink, can't beat a nice cup of tea made from fresh water, we just don't have this problem, I had 5 acres of land with two 25.000 litre tanks, this was the only source of water we had, we had an ecosystem installed for the toilets, this would give a run-off into the garden, we also had a bore, which had fresh water, but not as nice as rain water.

I feel sure you know what your doing, but the owners who think its a good idea in theory, then pay Mehmet and his brother to put it in, are the ones who cause all the problems.

They return to their luxury villa 6 months later and wonder what the problem is\was.
