Pope Benedict has called for the Catholic Church to reflect on what allowed the sexual abuse of children by priests to happen.

The number of sexual abuse cases had reached "an unimaginable dimension" in 2010, the Pope said.

He also spoke of the "shame" the abuse crisis had caused the Church.

The abuse scandal, which first surfaced in the US in 2002, erupted globally this year with a raft of allegations across Europe and beyond.

Well the first thing you should learn from the experience is that dealing with the problem 'in-house' behind closed doors and sweeping it under the carpet is tantamount to aiding and abetting.

Second just moving aberrant priests to another position does not make the problem go away.

Thirdly and most importantly, when it turns out you are personally culpable for many of the mistakes you are probably not Pope material....

what a blxxdy hypocrite the pope is. He was given the tasks to deal with the peado priests and as Groucho said he just swept it all under the carpet and did sod all. He should be kicked out of his job.

If the Pope had taken any positive and appropriate action I doubt there would be many priests left for the Pontiff to pontificate over so he is prevaricating instead ! A better title might be "Blind Pugh".

Far better the Pope sent every member of his flock a coupla three 'freebie' cans of 'Priest Off', as a thoughtful Xmas gesture from the Vatican!

im non religious but its happening on both sides when i was back in the uk ministers of the church of England were brought to task over sexual allegations over young ones & that was wiped under the carpet so it doesn't happen with 1 religion

Thats my opinion
