I think it looses something in the translation.

Perhaps "tarred with the same brush" comes closer.

Just because you heard it in the UK does not mean it's a well known adage... or indeed British in origin either. In all my years, I've never come across the phrase before. However, I understood its use perfectly well and thought you were being enigmatic..
