Hi everyone, I am new on this forum; I will be resuming studies at the Eastern Mediteranean University in Famagusta by February 2011. I will love to make friend here before my arrival, friends that will always advice me and be like brothers and sisters to me. I am a citizen of Nigeria(africa) and I have never travelled outside my country before so sometimes I feel scared of what North Cyprus has to offer me. Please I need honest friends, friends that will paint me a true picture of what I expect to meet in North Cyprus.

Quarmby, thanks also for the generalization, I guess that's what the brutes(Brits) are known for.

Sorry my Nigerian sense of humour got the better of me.

Yes Groucho! 25 and still a student. Presently am a graduate of Accounting ( HND from a polytechnic), I have Diploma in Network infrastructure- Microsoft Technology; I have IATA/UFTAA certification; and a Certificate in Information Science. But in Nigeria all these certification are usually nonsense and waste without (1) Internationally recognized Master Degree (2) seven to ten years work experience (3) a God by your side or a senior govt official.

In most cases you see a Phd holder doing the job of first degree holder. Even at 45years majority are still in school; In this part of the world everything you will become is dependent on the numbers of educational qualification you have and also subject to international recognition. A graduate without an MBA is as good as a man without a degree at all.

So YES I'm 25 and still schooling.

Well said Zik4zik

You're obviously more intelligent than some on here and if that means studying for a bit longer then good for you.

I'm sure you will find nicer people to meet once you are in North Cyprus. They are not all sarcastic like you have experienced so far!

Good Luck

Zik4zik: You made a terrible mistake introducing yourself on this board with the truth. I suggest you do a popular thing and register again with a faked identity.

So. You are British and white (all other Britishers and foreigners are inferior). You are a retired major. You vote BNP and support the resurrection of Enoch Powell. You read The Sun. You don't give a damn for anything Cyprus. Your best contribution to C44 will be about some English football club (mind: not Scottish, Welsh or Irish!). You become a member of Youtube at once and copy videos daily, again preferably avoiding any subject Cyprus. You visit the opening of new restaurants with a doggy-bag (so the last people in the queue: too bad!). And don't forget to copy jokes from the Internet for the umptieth time (don't mention the source - people will think you are original, creative and funny).

More tips available.

Welcome to the board!

I joined Cyprus44 simply because I needed to ground myself with knowledge of North Cyprus and it's people as a place I will be schooling next year; I am very much aware this is a public forum where different people with different ideology and sense of reasoning will post their opinion as regard any querries, questions or suggestions SO what I will do is that I will pick the advice that are useful to me and ignore the rest. I will not change my identity for any reason what so ever!

I don't think a degree course at EMU will be of any international worth as TRNC tertiary education is not widely recognised overseas.

Zic,

Out of interest, what is the situation like for Masters graduates from the UK working in Nigeria? Is there much of an expat scene these days? Or is it more Africa for Africans?

Zik4zik,

I wasn't having a go at you... I was just dreading the idea of our daughter or son still being a student at 25/26 and beyond.

I was rather hoping it would all be done and dusted by then.

Hi Zik4zik, I just wanted to reply to you and message number 12 as that statement made by number 12 is not 100% correct. My nephew goes to to the Girne American University and studies English Teaching and has been doing some research on furthering his education in the UK, where the General Teaching Council for England as well as other universities told him he needs a letter from NARIC UK ( a company in the UK who give approval to over sea universities and state that their certificate is acceptable in the UK) And Girne American University have had this letter from the NARIC who have given them the approval since 2005. A photo copy was made for my nephew who is delighted. So this is great news for students at the Girne American who wish to go back to the UK.

However I dont know if EMU or any other universities have this certificate. You will need to go the Rector's secretary and ask to see the letter of approval and have a photo copy made.

Good morning Denny, Masters Degree holders especially expat from UK, America, Greece, Kenya and Indai are often refered to as the BIG BOYS; all the major companies prefer foreigners in key positions basically bcos thier degrees and qualifications are percieved to be of international standard. To be honest with you, these expat fly-in in thousands daily and there is always enough vacancies for them all especially in the telecom and oil sector.

This crave for international qualification is what causes unemployment for the fresh local graduates with just Bsc while those with Masters degree from Europe and America get good job offers with ease especially the expats.

Groucho, I understand your point; while I was growing up as a kid I had a projection that by age 19, I would have been done wt education but as time went bye, I began to realise that in Nigeria you hv to do more than just a Bsc or HND in Accounting to be successful. It hurts so much to see ones Dream deviate from expectat

In statements to Anatolia news agency, Necip Mutlu, TMMOB general secretary, said it has been established that 42 persons, working as architects, have fake diplomas and added that these "diplomas" were prepared in the name of "private universities in the TRNC".

Hi there. Just want to comment that you might be interested to know that there is a very lively Christian fellowship at EMU made up of a very large number of 'African' students. I can give contact details if wanted! I am sure you wil have no problems whatsoever making friends over here. Lots of nice people to be found and to befriend you. Just look in the right places - and forgive some of the Brits for their warped sense of humour. Don't forget they honestlybelieve in U.K that the kind of 'hurtful' banter they sometimes use just shows how much they love you.

Good luck with all you do. You seem to have to right attitude to succeed. There are a number of students here from your country. Also a number of parents here with children at the schools and universitys here who seem very pleased with their childrens progress. Maz they can be downright disrepectful which is so hard on a young person looking for his future xxx

Very clever the Hellenic Resource Network slipped in the "diplomas from illegal universities in the occupied part of Cyprus." but the Turks nor Afrika newspaper used this phrase I will warrant.
