Kibtek recently told us that once the re-cabelling work was complete, power cuts would be a thing of the past. As I recall, they specified the areas concerned and the dates upon which this work was due to be finished. Catalkoy for example was due for completion on Thursday 9th September.

Is there more than one Catalkoy on the island...because the one I live in is still very much "yok elecktrik"!

D'oh...I have just realised I said September - I meant August!!! So we should have been power-cut free from last week. Sorry. Clearly my brain is "yok elektrik" as well.

Someone else echoed my sentiment in the weekend's Cyprus Today. Glad to know I am not alone in my thinking.

Why not look at purchasing a small inverter from someone like Silent Power. For less than a grand you at least can have a lights and t.v to help you get over the lack of electricity.

Hello, I sympathise with your problem, but there seems to be within Catalkoy the have's and the have not's, we live on the lower side ie Happy Valley side and have'nt had a power cut for ages, it seems top side are always having them, I cant understand it!.

I hope I am not tempting fate here!

the power cuts will remain in cyprus most probably forever.

the distribution lines, trafos and relais stations all need to be replaced.

we offer german, swiss or american equipment for back up power (and solar) systems.

reliable, long lasting, best prices.

just visit our website http://www.kibsolar.com

or write to ppersonn@gmx.net

Hippo still advocates the use of a generator for back up- and i certainly wont be getting rid of mine just yet.

The cuts arn't as long as they used to be.

Solar power is ok as a suplementary but will not power your air conditioning, i can buy an awfull lot of petrol and generators for the price of a solar instalation.

Incendently anybody considering buying solar pannels they are at least 40% cheaper in Turkey than here.

Power Cuts - A thing of the past.

I remember this was the Prime Ministers claim back in 2005.

Although I will say in Kibteks defence they have done a lot of work to upgrade the electricity infrastructure.

We have been away in the UK for 5 days and arrived home last night to find the electric had tripped and the freezer was defrosted, same happened last April when we took a short trip away, is it saying don't leave the country?

The electricity will never be right here as Kibsolar says. Having lived here for the best part of my life, I can only say if you want to leave the country for a short while, empty your freezer, or get a friend to look after things for you. When we first came here we had power cuts every night without fail, and long ones at that, no British Television, and no generators, but we are still here.

Yes Kibtec's recent good run on reliability has certainly come to an end in Esentepe in the past few days particularly yesterday with it out for much of the day and night.

We like the power cuts, not had many lately though. Seems to be automatic when there are thunderstorms. I bought a bloody big Yamaha generator three years ago, if the power cuts stop I won't get me moneysworth!

Kibtech replaced their generators last year for much more efficient newer ones. There should be no problem with the amount of eletricity being generatated, in fact Kibtech are predicting that they will be in a position to export to the South soon. The problem is with the miserably bad (in some places) ifrastructure to get the electricity to your light switch. They need to work on the supply system with some urgency.

msg 12, Hippo,

i didnt suggest a solar installation, i suggested a UPS = accumulator buffered back-up system instead having a 10 KVA generator runned for just couple of lights, the booster pump, the heating pump and a TV, see msg 8.

i dont know where you ask for solar pv modules in north cyprus and i dont know whom you did ask in turkey.

the prices in turkey are 4- 5 euro plus transport, import fees and maybe 18% turkish VAT as not everybody has an export license.

a lot of them come from china or india.

kibsolars prices for EU made modules are 10-20% cheaper as in Turkey! and no transport, no import, and incl cyprus VAT! (=3,60 euro to your door price)

if anybody interested in our pricelist, please visit http://www.kibsolar.com, we will upload the new one this evening. on our "home" we have also special offers...

Pricelist 2009 is online, see it here: http://personngroup.com/x/files/2009AGD_PL.pdf or for a html version (not so good layout) click here: http://personngroup.com/x/files/PL2009/2009AGD_PL.htm

Message 20, Blackie: KibTek bought GENERATORS but not efficient generators! And yes, they are GENERATORS! (Rumours say they are big ship engines!) The old Teknecik (which was not replaced!!) is much more efficient, its a Powerstation, with steam and all other stuff.. Good old (very old) Siemens technology. The new generators are inefficient, but buying them was cheap. They burn diesel, so called fuel oil. The new Siemens Powerstations working with gas @ 55% efficiency are sold out for the next 10 years!!

BTW:It is no secret that Kibtek tried to privatise the Electric net (I think 10-15 years ago) and they could not sell it for the "symbolic" price of 1 USD! When you look around you might see why.. To renew all electrical infrastructure - it will take years and millions...

Regards, Henrik
