Since 1998 Cyprus, an island with a population of 700,000 in the eastern Mediterranean, has become an important distribution center for British tobacco companies. They export to Cyprus more than six billion cigarettes every year, only to be smuggled back into Britain and sold to the black market. One in four cigarettes in Britain is contraband.

Many of these cigarettes come from Imperial Tobacco, which has its headquarters in Bristol. In August 2000 a container with five million cigarettes was seized by Customs in Bristol. Fifty per cent of the cigarettes were Imperial Tobacco's. The container had left Limassol, the main port of Cyprus, then shipped to Lisbon and from there it was unsuccessfully smuggled into the UK.

Armed Customs officers intercepted the 1,542-ton Cambodian registered freighter Marina off the coast of Crete after the vessel had attempted to ram their patrol boat. The ship had been tracked from Cyprus to Port Said in Egypt and now she was bound for Latvia.

Aboard were seven million packs of British-produced cigarettes, mainly Mayfair and Sovereign Kings, worth more than £17million on the black market in the UK.

The trail from the seized shipment led to a 34-year-old playboy on the island of Cyprus, Christos Tornarides, scion of a local political dynasty and one of the island's mysterious new rich.

Mr Tornarides and his firm, CT Tobacco, are now the focus of an international investigation by police and Customs in Greece, Cyprus and Britain. Mr Tornarides is alleged to have been in regular telephone contact with the Marina's Greek skipper as the ship sailed to Latvia.

Despite the fact that most reports in the British press claim that Cyprus is the Mediterranean hub for tobacco smuggling, Cyprus is just a part of a Mediterranean and Balkan smuggling ring, which also includes Italy, Malta, Montenegro, Ukraine, Turkey, Lebanon, Syria, Egypt, Israel, Latvia, Greece, Belgium, Portugal and the Netherlands.

Apart from the Cypriot businessman, ICIJ's report also mentions Kental, an offshore company in Cyprus involved in British American Tobacco (BAT) smuggling for the past 25 years. Additional research proves that Kental Traders Ltd was just a part of a much wider network of companies operating in Cyprus to smuggle BAT tobacco into the Middle East. The network included a shipping company, a bonded warehouse company and a marketing company to promote business for Kental.

BAT not in cyprus anymore closed
