In the UK VAT will increase by 2.5%. This wil cost the average faimily an extra £469 per year. Ed Milliband says the increae of the coalition cuts are going too far ad far too fast. He said the 2.5% increase will hinder economic growth and cost thousands more jobs. It will make it harder for families to make ends meet. God now you cant afford to drink smoke or drive where will the revenue come from. How many more brits will sail the sinking ship. I fear for my grandkids xxx

lilli hi times are going to be very bumpy here in the UK

my business like most haven't seen a profit for some time now and I guess unless we make further cuts to our business and personel life we will continue to live off our assets and grow our debts

the public have zipped up and fear their jobs and property

so shops will see a drop in business as the months drag on

the only survivors are the pound like shops here, a good deal is cheap and good cheers

You know such a big part of me wants to return so much for my family. You cant make a fortune here even though you work so hard but could i do it there, i guess the answer is no. What am I a front of house glorified waitress. At my age in UK i dont think so. I have worked hard all my life , ok we made the wrong choice here but it is not all bad as the lovely people i met and those who have become friends will remain so. I cant go back as the dogs xxxxxxx

What we do know about this VAT increase, like all tax hikes, is that the filthy rich won't let it touch them... they'll just ratchet-up the costs they pass on... Who will suffer? The poor... but they need that don't they? Just to let them know it's their fault we are in this shit! Oh, no.... it wasn't their fault was it? It was those bloody bankers. Still never mind eh, just give them a bonus so they can cope with the extra expenditure or they will leave their poorly paid positions of trust... what a joke!

When it was put DOWN by 2.5% it made no difference and no one really noticed. So why all the fuss in the UK when it goes UP by 2.5%? But it all helps to plug the huge state deficit left to our kids and grandkids by Miliband, Brown, Blir, and the rest of the dick%%%ds in the Labour Party Govt.

Read an article a couple of months back that spelled out the damage Labour has done, and it only took what 10 years was it? to the future of the population of the UK, it demonstrated how for the first time since the depression years, the children generation of today will be worse off than their parents.

The government are so short-sighted, they will actually lose money by doing this, certainly in the areas of the economy that can pay by cash. There are so many people that ask to pay for jobs in cash and this increase will only make that more prevalent. Reduce the tax and more people will spend money, money moves around the economy and everyone is happy. Simples! Put tax up and people shut their wallets and don't spend. Trouble is, as usual, is that the ones making the decisions are not in the real world.. they live in a world of expenses and high salaries and the changes don't really affect them. It is certainly a wrong decision in my opinion.

Geoff, Terry

So after all it wasn't the banks and their deregulation that precipitated the western world into this disaster then? Just the former Labour Government.....

Typical Tory reaction. VAT is tax on people who are not earning. All they had to do is put up income tax by a few pence and perhaps get our high earners to pay a (50%) higher rate. But no, hit the poor man after all he can't hit back. But let the banks to get away with murder.

Well elections have a habit of coming round every now and then. Not that I ever voted for them but just hope that they don't resort to what Mrs T did when she found herself in similar situation - Start another war.

God forbid that non earners (benefit claimants) not only do not work for monies received, but should not pay tax either!!

So a military junta invading the Falkland's is Mrs T starting a war.

To tax people who do not earn is immoral. Pay them less by all means. Why pay them and spend money to collect it back?

Vat hits everyone including children. We really have come through the Victorian era, really we have. Next, you'll be suggesting 7 day a week and 18 hour day so those poor bankers can pay themselves a few million more in bonuses.

Socialism? where, when? I wish.

Re the Malvinas,

Not sure how much you are aware, but Mrs T was aware of what the Argentinians were about to do and did not make a sound. I wonder why?

Gromit, I am not just against the last 2.5%, the whole concept is wrong. Tax should be paid when earned. The more you earn the more you pay. With Vat we all pay the same and not only that but the rich are able to fiddle the books and claim most of it back.

It hits the poor in society far more than the rich.

Unless you are after 14.28 %... as a percentage increase based on the previous level of 17.5 %?

To get back to the original post, it's only 2.5%, hardly Armageddon and the end of civilization.

I can remember when Milliband was part of the government who raided billions from the pension funds.

It doesn't matter which party are in power they are all the same! No links to reality or to the man in the street and no understanding of how these various tax hikes affect real people.
