The most powerful atom-smasher ever built will come online on Wednesday, eagerly anticipated by scientists worldwide who have awaited this moment for two decades.



The multibillion Large Hadron Collider will explore the tiniest particles and come ever closer to re-enacting the Big Bang, the theory that a colossal explosion created the universe.



The machine at CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, in Geneva, Switzerland, promises scientists a closer look at the make-up of matter, filling in gaps in knowledge or possibly reshaping theories.





Now I have read the book by Dan Brown - Angels and Demons ... fact or fiction? But they reckon in three months time, a miniture black hole will have been created ...?

Its a bit 'high tech' but I will be watching the role out of events very closely. You never know, Switzerland maybe sucked in to a black hole ....

A letter in the times today claims that the scientists confirm that tomorrows test is completely safe and will not cause the end of the world. It also questions if this is what the scientists were saying 14 million years ago.

Apparently particles are bombarding the earth every moment of every day at far greater speeds and velocity than will be conducted in the experiment. This is why scientists say it will be safe - nothing is being done which isn't already happening in nature but is being fashioned on a smaller scale.

Accelerating with iant magnets might get a Proton Car moving quickly I suppose. Not sure why they don't use Kia Magentis though.
