I know someone who wants to take their Masters at University and has asked me which one is the best.

She lives in Lapta and doesn't drive, so GAU would be the right answer!

But any advice would be grateful.

METU is the best - mainland Turkish University (with international recognition) with campus near Guzelyurt.

The Near East Uni is best - on the outskirts of Nicosia near the Girne turn off. Internationally acredited.

Near East Uni is fast developing and best campus - but international recognition would be more with a uni like METU!

What are the costs of doing a Masters in the north and is there a definitive list of who has international accreditation? Only asking as I have taught U/Gs and P/Gs in the UK, so info on lecturing opportunities also welcome.

METU by rather a lot, but they only offer masters in 10-12 subjects and I believe they are mostly engineering based. Their website could tell you more. Probably Near East after that.

If there looking to remain here then OK, otherwise I'd suggest one of the top 5 Uni's in the UK

Suggest you do your own research and then decide. My feeling is METU is still the best, even though it is changing a little from its inception. Near East is a good runner up, and whereas EMU at Famagusta used to be great, that has changed too. Lefke is an interesting and long established uni,l but a bit out of the way geographically.

Also you do not mention which subject, and as has been suggested METU is still somewhat limited and concentrates on engineering and has little arts/law etc.

Good luck in the search. Look up the web pages. Go and see the unis. Talk to people who are connected with them all, and then make your decision. As to costs, again, see the web pages, or e mail them.

Certainly cheaper than U.K, but....

Bologna Process allows recognition of any qualifications. Unfortunately North Cyprus is not recognised and this can have implications regarding your qualification. Read up on this to help with your decision. If you are staying in the TRNC it does not matter but if you need the qualification to be recognised elsewhere you had better check up on this.

Good Luck

There are various accreditations that unis here have. For GAU, they now have a campus at Canterbury, and so this might ultimately help their acceptance into the Bologna process. For now, however, they have accreditation from America and Germany. I agree with Bradus, do your homework, but all is not totally lost. The fight continues for acceptance within the Bologna process, - again, I agree do ALL your homework, but for the person in question if they are living here in Lapta, then GAU or METU could be the answer, with GAU providing their own buses for transport - a lot of students live out Lapta way. Or for METU then a Dolmus will pick up.

Hi all,

In order to see accreditation of universities I'd advise you to check their websites as I know for sure that all Turkish Cypriot established universities have accreditation and recognition not just METU.

Also note that GAU has opened a campus last year in Canterbury, UK and in preparations for a campus in Singapore.

Personally I would check accreditation using sources other than the university website.

Micho, you obviously didn't read my posting, when I mentioned Canterbury in connection with the Bologna process, and I do agree with Bradus - but where does one go other than to the universities themselves?

To establish whether accreditation is valid you would need to go to the authority responsible for awarding the status.

University websites usually have a link of the accreditation if you would like to check validity.

Anyone interested in unis here should go talk to admissions staff.

This is a subject close to my heart as I work with many overseas staff that have unfortunately not got a recognisable degree. To have to inform people that they do not hold the essential qualifications, when the have spent 3 years studying, is not an easy thing and I have experienced anger, frustration and stress from many candidates.

Universities are often economical with the truth, for instance many state that they are FOLLOWING the Bologna Process which is entirely different to being a certified member. In August this year politicians and academics from the TRNC and Britain met. I quote from the final statement in the enclosed link:

"On his part, Bicak noted that moves should be made in order to include TRNC universities in the Bologna process, adding that Williams could assist the TRNC in this"
