Has anyone else heard that really really loud noise today over loudspeaker in Girne? Its beeping like the chimes or something. And also a man speaking really loud over the loudspeaker in Turkish.

Its deafening!

Does anyone know what it is or why its happening?

I asked about this a couple of years ago, and I was told it was just a test. Don't know if that is correct.

I think its part of the early warning system. hope they give it us in English too.

i found out it is a test by the Municipality, and they have various speakers up all around town, the reason it was so loud is that we have speakers on the building across from the office. I'm not sure what they are testing, maybe it is an early warning system like Johhny Lee said.

It is an early warning system and it was introduced to alert the populace of an imminent attack by GC's but since that threat has diminished they use it to warn local businesses about the impending influx of Brit holiday makers. Although there is no immediate threat at the moment they are testing the system prior to the start of the holiday season and this will allow restaurants/shops etc to either close or it will allow them to know when to put up their prices. One owner of a fish and chip restaurant reckoned it was contribution to the local economy as it allowed ample time to go out and buy frozen chips so that he could make sure his freezers were fully stocked. There is talk of modifying the alert system so they can assign different sounds to different nationalities of holiday makers. For example If there is an influx of Russian holiday makers then the restaurants/shops would know when to change their menus/stocks to suit.

All of the above posted very much tongue in cheek.

Are you sure it's not the old Imam calling all you non-believers to convert? I would if I was you, then he may turn down the volume if you are lucky.
