Can anyone tell me what the weather is normally like then? Also do you think there will be enough for my family to do for a week over new year ( 3 young children), and if there are any outdoor heated swimming pools?

Can be cold and quite wet.We stayed over new year .Our villa is open plan and marble floors throughout so you can imagine how cold it was, halogen heaters and wood fires were not effective so we are having central heating installed.Sorry dont know about outdoor swimming pools ours isnt heated.

Also stayed over new year, was cool at night, but aircon units on warm were good. Days good, sometimes 20 degrees, pool heated so swam on sunny days.

problem is during the day its quite warm but the temperature drops so much in the evenings (along with very short daylight) that it feels really cold. If you're staying in your own place then I suggest you get rugs to keep at the side of the beds and warm slippers.

If you're staying in a hotel then most of them have heating so it'll be warm at night. The Altinkaya in Girne (on the road to Belepais) has an indoor pool albeit small but at least its indoors.

The Ship Inn also has an indoor pool - we stayed in February this year - poured down for 3 days and gorgeous for the other 4 but you definitely need sleeves at night!!

Jumbo

We spent some time January 2005, one day sitting round harbour sipping beer in shirt sleeves the next two days very cold & wet then a sunny day & so one.

Once the sun goes down it feels really cold. Keeping kids amused could be a nightmare. Sorry if this is not what you want to hear, but forwarned etc.

It can be chilly and wet, however Oscars, Riverside and Ship Inn do have indoor pools. Also you can check out the bowling alley on top of Astro in Lefkosa which is handy to entertain the kids in bad weather, it's quite cheap 5ytl a game (including shoe hire last time I was there), also you can do "night bowling" which is not too late as it get dark quickly where the alleys and skittles glow in the dark. Hope this helps!!
