As most of us must be aware Australia (and in particular Queensland and now Brisbane) have suffered terrible flooding. The worst for decades.

They haven't asked for assistance from the outside world but we should be able to do something to help.

Not only ex-pat but there are many Turkish Cypriots with links to Australia who could help.

I am talking to Pete and Sandra (of entertainment fame) about doing something on Australia Day which is 26 January but if anyone has any bright ideas about fundraising please let me know. I don't particularly want to 'take charge' of this but would just like to start the ball rolling.

Think about the floods in Lapta last week and multiply that by, what, a thousand times? Get the picture?

Come on people let's do something to help.

Australia is a fully developed rich country. They do not need help as much as Pakistan and Bangladesh. If you have spare cash, send it to those who really need it. You will make a real difference.

Yenibob; I'm not interested in a protracted exchange over this but if Pakistan spent a bit less on Nuclear weapons they could help themselves when disaster strikes. Please don't bother to reply.

I will reply! The poor people of Pakistan have no say in the procurement of weapons and do not deserve to suffer because they have a crass Government.

Australia is more than capable of looking after itself!

I agree yenibob. Sri Lanka has also had severe flooding and people who lost their homes in the tsunami have once again lost everything, they didn't have a lot to begin with anyway. I do sympathise with the people of Australia who are suffering this flooding but I know who I'll donate my money to.

Surely these last two people can't reflect the opinions of the rest of the TRNC?

Does no-one really give a damn?

The Aussies only need emotional support while the poor, ravaged folk of the Third World need everything!

I suppose we also chip in for the places in the Uk that are / will be flooded over the next few months?

Mind you, there will be places in the States ravaged by hurricanes!

The Phillipines will be hammered by typhoons

The TRNC will be hit with more flood water - where do the priorities lie? AT HOME!

Trooper,

You obviously mean well and there are times when we see what's happening to people in other countries that our hearts go out to them and we'd like to help in some way if we could.

I'm sorry the responses you've received so far seem to be throwing your good intentions back in your face.

At the same time I do sort of agree with the responses to a degree. Perhaps if Australian folk felt they needed help in any way and could tell us what it was they were really in need of at this time - if more than just words of support - then perhaps we could think about something we could do or send to them that would be of use.

What about the folk in the TRNC who have been flooded out who is helping them? Not the government as they are broke or so they say.

It is with great regret that I find myself having to agree with the sentiments of yeniflop. Mr Trooper, the Aussies have been having it too good for far to long, $50 billion a year on coal exports alone for China to burn creating climate change (?) and you suggest they need financial help?! Too many Poms out there, even the PM is one (even though of Welsh stock) who have been Australianised to such a degree that they'll cope by their own accord. Shame about the Lapta immigrants that can't help themselves in a crisis!

Anyone holding $Aus, get out of them. £1=$1.50 is unsustainable. Follow SunCorp shares (Oz's largest insurance company) and see how they pan-out in the following weeks!

Not looking good for Brisbane, tomorrow (Wednesday) getting worse and Thursday catastrophic. Weather forecast broadcasted on the BBC via ABC. My brother's house in Petrie, Brisbane just a few metres away from flooding.

Well it's been an 'interesting' response but a disappointing one. At least Pippie makes me feel that I'm not entirely out of step!

I never expected people to have to choose between one disaster or another in terms of support but just thought the Aussies could use some. Never mind, I'll give some thought to alternative avenues.

The former PM of Australia was on the news this morning and he said they (the government) have a list of countries willing to send assistance in all forms and he stated that at the moment, they are coping BUT should that change, they will call in those offers. I do not know if any is financial but I suspect it is.

It is with regret I note that some of the replies to Trooper's request have been a little mean, given the unfortunate circumstances, and I'm sorry that Brinsley seems to have forgotten the spirit of Anzac, but I can understand that most people would prefer to reserve their sympathies for the less well-developed countries that have suffered similar catastrophes.

I also note that to date, Australia hasn't actually called for international assistance, and is in fact trying to cope with the relief requirements in-house, as it were.

Our son lives and works in Brisbane so as you can imagine we are worried sick. They all seem to be coping alright for now and the emergency services are working flat out but the big test will come tomorrow when the waters peak, I feel sure that should the government ask for help then that the UK and others will respond.

Lilli,

I have relatives there, and like you I can't get in touch! just a little reassurance would help us all! I'm sure they will get all the help they need! It's afterwards when all can see the damage thats has been done to their homes and the mopping up begins!

Lilli

I spoke to my son today, they are having big problems over there with internet connections so try not to panic, remember no news is good news.

I'll forward you some more links to local papers in Brisbane if you want to keep up to date.

For myself, when I read about little Ismail my concern for the Aussies is a bit lower down the scale. What little I can donate will make a huge difference to him and would be totally insignificant to a country with the resources and backing of Australia.
