Stephan,

Why not drum up a bit more interest by treating us to the headlines of the time? Hopefully that should generate some offers (unless they're as pants as these days )

Msg 3

>>High Commissioner Donald Gordon, in his own comment, rang the bell for something even worse: “The continued failure of the Turks,” he wrote, “to make any move towards a federal solution with two largely autonomous states and a weak central government, despite the fact that the other side have pretty well conceded this in principle, leads one to speculate that they may have some other purpose in mind: either partition or assimilation of northern Cyprus into Turkey.”

And with a reference to Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, the High Commissioner said that “he would be foolish to go for incorporation into Turkey although there is some evidence to suggest that this has for years been his personal dream.”<<

No comment necessary...

RE msg 7, "Denny": High Commissioner Donald Gordon, 1976. Only two years after the mainland Turks - as guarantors - had the courage to intervene in Cyprus. Saving the Cypriot Turks from extermination. Mr Gordon, representing "guarantor" UK, was certainly not the man to have ANY comment.

DC,

Perhaps, but they certainly had an accurate assessment of the long-term Turkish ambition of taksim. Which hardly makes the 1974 operation "courageous", not only because this led to a bloodbath for both sides, but since they had previous opportunities to intervene with troops in 1964 and 1967.

However, I agree with you that the British government acted shamefully in its inaction after the coup, especially given the number of UK troops on the bases plus UN soldiers who could have been re-badged fairly rapidly.

RE msg 9, "Denny": (...) this led to a bloodbath for both sides (...)

▶ Better than the complete and final bloodbath on one side.
