The work of this great Scot, Mr. Robert Burns, has been translated - and rightly so - in my native language by the best Dutch linguists. I'd like to do the 14th verse of "A Dream" in Dutch* during the Traditional Burns Night - what an impressive work of art.

* If a foreign language is allowed?

Shrewd Willie Smellie to Crochallan came;

The old cock'd hat, the grey surtout the same;

His bristling beard just rising in its might,

'Twas four long nights and days to shaving night:

His uncomb'd grizzly locks, wild staring, thatch'd

A head for thought profound and clear, unmatch'd;

Yet tho' his caustic wit was biting-rude,

His heart was warm, benevolent, and good.

And this has to be my favourite piece

Farewell to the Highlands, farewell to the North,

The birth-place of Valour, the country of Worth;

Wherever I wander, wherever I rove,

The hills of the Highlands for ever I love.

My heart's in the Highlands, my heart is not here,

My heart's in the Highlands, a-chasing the deer;

Chasing the wild-deer, and following the roe,

My heart's in the Highlands, wherever I go.

Farewell to the mountains, high-cover'd with snow,

Farewell to the straths and green vallies below;

Farewell to the forests and wild-hanging woods,

Farewell to the torrents and loud-pouring floods.

My heart's in the Highlands, my heart is not here,

My heart's in the Highlands, a-chasing the deer;

Chasing the wild-deer, and following the roe,

My heart's in the Highlands, wherever I go.

I may go to one if any on next week when I'm in Turtle Bay, but we will have our usual

one when I return, in conjunction with An Commun Gaidhlaig, Largs Gaelic Choir will be

singing Burns songs, in their original form, and it is always a great, fun night.

Oh what a sleekit horrible beastie

Lurks in your belly efter the feastie

Just as ye sit doon among yer kin

There sterts to stir an enormous wind

The neeps and tatties and mushy peas

Stert workin like a gentle breeze

But soon the puddin wi the sauncie face

Will have ye blawin all ower the place

Nae matter whit the hell ye dae

A'body's gonnae hiv tae pay

Even if ye try tae stifle

It's like a bullet oot a rifle

Hawd yer bum tight tae the chair

Tae try and stop the leakin air

Shifty yersel fae cheek tae cheek

Prae tae God it doesnae reek

Oot it comes like a clap o thunder

Ricochets aroon the room

Michty me a sonic boom

Hope I huvnae shit my breeks

Tae the bog I better scurry

Aw whit the hell it's no ma worry

Cannae help but raise a smile

Wiz him! I shout with accusin glower

Alas too late, he's just keeled ower

A dinnae feel welcome any mair

Sounds like just the job fur me

In Ayrshire, the Bard's own country, we celebrate Burns through into February

and indeed throughout the year.

What an amazing knowledge of nature, birds (the feathered kind) flowers, and trees/

A country boy, but lucky enough to be given an education, which was more highly rated

in Scotland then.
