It was interesting to see Trevor Mcdoneald walking round the old Nicosia Airport with the UN and listening to the narrative. Did anyone else notice that all the signs were in Greek and English only, what an equal society that must have been if you were Turkish not to have a single sign in your own language.

Pity Mr Mcdonald did not notice it, we heard the usual talk of the Turkish Invasion, with a mention of the Greek led coup, but nothing of the in equalities that existed at the time.

That one minute of film footage showed and said a lot in my opinion.

Yes, I noticed that all the signs at the airport were in Greek & English only too, and thought exactly the same as you.

To think, this was in 1974, 14 years after the Republic of Cyprus was created as a "shared" republic and both Turkish & Greek were official languages!

Tells us a lot.... So does the coup d'etat and the Greek desire for Enosis...

However, only we and Turkey see this.. EU & UK do not. Luckily Turkey is gaining power and EU/UK are losing it!

THINGS LIKE THAT SHOULD NOT REALLY BE TALKED ABOUT ON THE OPEN FORUM. It is very political. Same as every country who is split should never be spoken about.

I think it should be because the suppression of a language and a people should not happen

All the signs in the North have the GC and Tc and English names

Do the Turkish village names appear in the rest of cyprus (I don't know the answer)

In Wales the signs are in English and Welsh

It can be amusing in Shropshire and border counties where the road works signs stray 20 miles from the border and you are faced with"Arf"

I watched this as well and found his wander through the green line interesting to watch. The destruction and bullet holes were a stark reminder of the depth of feeling that existed then and still exists today in some people (on both sides).

What I found more interesting was the interview with Stelios (of Easy-Jet fame) who introduced a couple of Cypriots who were jointly running a Car Hire business that allowed customers to take the cars to any part of Cyprus.

One of Greek descent, one of Turkish, but both Cypriots, working happily together and the best of friends.

There's always hope when you give it a chance.

Andy Msg 6 - For those who did not see it - the report was fair and as is often the case had some inaccuracies (I'm sure the Greek Cypriots would say the same).

The car hire Turkish Cypriot you mention is Izzet (who set up and runs Cyprus44) and for those of you who do not know it he runs a travel business in North Cyprus and also a car hire company that does go across the border it is to be found at http://www.cyprus-car.com (Izzet does not use his own forum to promote himself very much so I am doing it for him.)

Tom

i am surprised izzet doesnt promote it on here as it would be very usefull for people who want to hire in the south and be allowed to bring north. There are a few who allow this now but more that dont .

Message 10. With respect, if you think that the programme was the worst advert for Cyprus ever (I am assuming you mean N Cyprus?), I can only assume you haven't seen many.

In comparison, it was extremely even-handed.

We felt it to be a somewhat biased and shallow programme. I know Trevor McDonald had only a limited time to visit Cyprus but think some of the facts could have been accurate, i.e. Turkish 'invasion'. Didn't do much to get over to the outside world the problems we encounter here, but as just a travel programme it was average.

Have you seen many unbiased programs regarding the TRNC? In comparison with many it was quite positive. I think TMcD has improved his view and what he said / thought.

Pity the driver was worried about going North as seemingly that could apply more to travelling south.

Nice to see Izzet on film and good of flightholiday in message 6 to advertise his competition (izzet's car hire company)
