A load of hot air it seems to me. Just what exactly, are the initiatives that will increase tourist numbers to the TRNC?

It seems to me that there will be a push on tourism this year.Maybe the people carrying out this promotion, should start by outlining that Northern Cyprus does actually exist, routes of how to get there etc.I still talk to people now who see it as a forbidden area, where the natives eat their young,

Paul.

I don't know about pushing the boat out - previous efforts were more like 'scuttling the ship'

Gunay said that Turkey was ready to share its experience in tourism sector with TRNC.

Would be better if Turkey 'did' share its experience and put its own tourist people in charge. At least those in the Turkish tourist industry know what they are doing, have a proven track record which proves they have qualifications for the job other than being someones son, daughter or political lackey.

It is a stunning country, real shame that there are those that think littering it with discarded plastic bottles, bags, household waste, broken glass or dumping building rubbish anywhere is perfectly OK.

I'm not sure about 'when people visit north cyprus they always revisit' especially when they see the eyesore rubbish strewn about and the half completed shells of 'luxury villas'.

As for Turkey giving it's advice about tourism, the travel press attitude is to report that the Turkish tourism industry, saw the increase in tourists (it was a cheap non euro destination) and then promptly put their prices up. Nothing new there then.

None of this is new though is it? How many times has the above been commented on and lamented over on this forum over the past few years? What has the Tourism Minister(s) done about it over the years? Answers on a postage stamp....

Well said Hector, message 13.

It's the same old, same old, year after year and sadly nothing positive regarding tourism ever seems to happen. How many times has it been said (on here and undoubtedly in other places) that they should seek the advice of Turkey with regard to tourism. With regard to Turkey increasing its prices, human nature, I'd say. I, too, would question the fact that "when people visit north cyprus they always revisit". On the contrary, I know of quite a lot of people I have met over the years who have said "never again".

Such a shame.

The North is being advertised in nearly every quality newspaper and the sundays, the Trevor McDonald article did us a load of good too, there were only about 15 places in the med he featured.

Its a marathon not a sprint, in the last 3 year years I have noticed a big difference

Tim,

Perhaps Fielding Towers is too expensive may i suggest a buy one get a week free offer??? If so book me in for a fortnight. I have a certain amount of empathy for your situation as it must cost you a fortune driving round the country supporting the mighty POOL

The trouble with this though is with the tourism comes alot of unsavouries too.....We live in North Devon and it is almost the forgotten area because there are no motor ways to get here, thus it is quiet and unspoilt, South Devon is beautiful but far more commercialized and busy.......would you want northern Cyprus to become commercialized like the south, in reality?....I am sure not....N. Cyprus the way I see is it is a well kept secret for people who want a quiet, gentle holiday without the brashness of the south, I would like to see kept this way......

Shrimp. I have great sympathy and empathy for what you say. Unfortunately or fortunately, depending on what your view is, the commercial realities of the situation will be somewhat different. TRNC needs to prosper on it's own.

TRNC is a beautiful country, in parts, but so are many others. It needs a massive culture change, particularly in understanding visitors needs and wants (like it or not). I have seen many comments in the past such as, ''if you don't like it, leave'' This is quite extraodinary. Tourists and those who live in the country are customers, just provide great value and take the money for goodness sake! They will keep coming.

Tourism can be a major 'invisible earning' for TRNC. If it fails, what replaces it at the same value? Why ignore it when a little effort can make a big difference

Customers are paying for the goods and services and if they complain because they are not up to standard, they have every right. This is not unique to TRNC, try France!

well maybe we have just been exceptionally lucky with our frequent visits and have not come across any rudeness or anything other than wanting to please....at a recent stay because we arrived so late and the resteraunt was shut the reception lad phoned out for a kebab for us and refused payment, he paid from his own pocket. We went to a coffee house way out west miles from anywhere Sadankoy????? not sure how to spell it now, but it was owned by the poorest of the poor people and we wanted to put some money behind their till, so purposely stopped where I am sure very few people stop, and were amazed when they refused again to take any money from us...they were so hospitable, just smiling at us and trying to communicate by sign language....keep it simple and you will please......

TRNC is a special place, it has unique beauty, a mystique, and is overwhelming friendly. There is no place like it...

The trouble is that it is in competition with many other places vying for custom in the Med!

....I do hope tourists flock there...

msg 21. I too experienced friendliness and excellent hospitality in the 4 years I lived and worked there. However, it needs to be consistent and across ALL aspects. It has to be special to compete. I have spent 40 years in multi national companies dealing in international business and I am still asking questions and learning a great deal from other people. So should the powers that be in TRNC. That's all my point is.

You are so right about keeping it simple.

I care enough about the place to want to see it prosper as we all do, even though I no longer live there.

Jeannie, not one summer, not one swallow, I lived there for 10 years and have holidayed three times a year there for the last six years, so it wasnt just a first impression..........I suppose if you are living there now and in your own home it is probably alot different dealing with everyday stuff but from my point of view everything in the garden is rosey and wouldnt want too much weeding done to keep it just the way it is..............
