The Geneva summit has failed to yield any concrete results. President Derviş Eroğlu said that he had gone to Geneva with a practical plan as requested by the Secretary General but had failed to see anything similar from the Greek Cypriot Side. Eroğlu however added that the proposals and efforts put forward by the Turkish Side were welcomed by the UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon. The President returned to the Republic yesterday evening.

Speaking upon his return at Ercan Airport, President Derviş Eroğlu said that the Turkish Side was two steps ahead of the Greek Cypriot Side and that he expected a third tripartite meeting to be held in March.

Evaluating the Geneva meeting, the President said that they had expected the meeting to move the negotiations process forward and to achieve results by May.

“However the meeting failed to meet those expectations” he added. Pointing out that the Greek Cypriot Side continued its opposition to the introduction of timetables and mediation in the talks, Eroğlu said “we on the other hand went to the meeting with a practical plan in line with the Secretary General’s request. However the Greek Cypriot Side did not come to the meeting with such a plan. It only read out its proposals on the chapter of Governance and Power sharing.”

Stating that the Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias was continuing to deliberately delay the process, the President said that he had warned the Secretary General on the issue.

“I told Ban Ki Moon that the elections were nearing in the South, followed by South Cyprus’s EU term Presidency in 2012 and Christofias’s own elections in 2013” the President said.

He also said that the Secretary General had made it clear at the start of the meeting that the latest proposals submitted by the Turkish Side on the chapter of Governance and Power sharing were within the framework of UN parameters.

Reminding of the UN Secretary’s statement read out at the end of the meeting, the President also pointed out that a new tripartite meeting could take place in March despite the Greek Cypriot leader’s objections.

Meanwhile, President Derviş Eroğlu’s Special Representative Kudret Özersay is in Brussels for contacts with EU officials.

Özersay who met with officials from the EU Commission discussed the negotiations process as well as the EU Direct Trade regulation.

trever macdonald's interesting series "the secret mediterranian"

visits the green line but stelios calls it "the border" (oops!)

apparently without the un the two sides would open fire on each other

...make a reunification deal from that? I really don't think so!

or perhaps wait until turkey leaves the island?

well they said the won't abadon it...perhaps they were not serious

or use a cyprus agreement as a precondition to turkey's eu entry?

nah, france and germany refuse to let them join, ask angela merkel

now we all wait to see who blinks first: trnc, the un or greek cyprus

...and consign this so-called process to the history books

The hot air generated over the years would keep a few hundred balloons in the air, but uit has done nothing for us on the ground.

But, what the heck will actually happen. If U.N. withdraw, don't think the south would DARE start any kind of conflict, cos it would mean they would shoot themselves in the foot over the EU. Turkish troops would then be here poermanently. Why doesn't the powers that be, let us be as we all - mon ey from Turkey, but give us recognition and lift embargoes.

And if you think that is as much hot air as the discussions, you could well be right, but SOMETHING has to be done.

maz,

a minor disagreement, misuderstanding or a trivial provocation

on a un-free "border", would quickly boil over, as sure as eggs

continuing the kitchen-based metaphors: out of the frying pan?

I put the word border into inverted commas not because it isn't

really a border... but in deference to mmmmmm who likes 'em
