This is not a wind up, but my friend of over thirty years swears it`s true. He went to get his mot (which is due on the 19th of this month) today and the nice people in Girne fined him 5oYTL for late payment! obviously he queried this "fine" as he still had 4 days to go on his current mot but the woman was adamant. Apparently he should have paid the 100YTL by the 26th of last month, obviously he had not paid therefore he accrued the "fine". I can`t believe what I`m writing but I saw the paperwork including the receipt for 150YTL. Has anyone else come across this?

was he basing the MOT date on the initial purchase of the car?

I wondered about that but his certificate clearly noted 19/9/08 as due date. I still cannot get my head around the whole shebang!

There seems to be a lot of confusion about MOT dates.

These are not based on the age of the car, but loosely on the date the vehicle is first registered in the TRNC. The MOT is currently due every 3 years. The actual dates for getting the MOT done are totally connected with the Regn. No. Each year a list is published of the actual approx. 2 week slots that the car can have the MOT issued. This rigid. You can't do an MOT early. If you're late you will be fined. The next MOT, even if the previous one was done a year late will be based on the list issued & not on the date of the last late MOT.

Our car was 1st registered & newly purchased on 01/04/2002. Our regn. plate is FB. The window for our 2nd MOT carried out this year was 28/07/08 - 12/08/08.

In 3 years time there may be a slightly different window for each Regn. plate. The date of the last MOT may be totally irrelevant.

This was this year's list. This is a complete list. No MOT carried out before or after these dates.

I know that a lot of people do not make a note of these dates when they are published & then may get caught out & miss the slot.
