I was in Cyprus 2 weeks ago and was really saddened to see the amount of litter around. Next to the newspaper kiosk near Kyrenia harbour there are so many water bottles and rubbish just dumped. Also on a day out at Karpaz we found a beautiful beach to swim in. However again there was so much litter on the road near the beach. How hard can it be for the government to act on this. Unless I am just being fussy!

PS Spurs losing 1-0

Noble,

No you are quite correct. Much of the once-beautiful north is now a litter-strewn toilet. Too many people don't have any pride in their country, although that could be because it isn't their country. You also have a government which as you rightly suggest will not make the effort to enforce legislation. It's a joke when you see how clean and tidy the Greek side is with big signs everywhere warning of heavy fines for littering. Sad.

The north is beautiful. Kyrenia is beautiful. The fact the government has preserved the natural beauty for so long by discouraging buildings of more than 4 storeys and within 100mtres of the beach is to be praised. I was highlighting a problem which can easily be rectified. As for the south, well I crossed over and feel it lacks the beauty of the north. Crossing in Nicosia just felt like I was in a "Doncaster town centre in the Med" (re Next, Debenhams, Starbuckes etc).

Wait until you get a bit more familiar with this place and you'll see that "rule" you mention is meaningless. You'll probably realise that corruption-linked over-development has ruined vast areas of north Cyprus. And littering may be easily rectified but it isn't being done. Wildlife as well as the environment is being destroyed while the authorities do nothing.

On the litter front, the government are finally starting to do some cleaning. There is currently a team working on the Lefkosa - Girne road and along the west road out of Girne there has been a lot done. Hopefully not too little too late and the venture continues. Only problem until the powers that be start executing litter bugs it will not stop!!!!!!

As for building. Go across to east coast and the beautiful fishing harbour at Bogaz. Just north of the village there is an absolute monstosity being built on a hilltop. We were so disgusted at seeing it did not take photos for posting. Would not be so bad if it was at sea level but it really is on top of a hill. Then you travel around to Bafra and the hideous Artemis right on beach. It would not look out of place in Las Vegas! etc, etc unfortunatley.

Noble, you visited the working capital of RoC, Lefkosia and of course it looks like any West European city centre. Venture further afield and you will find some beautiful countryside and mountain villages etc that Cyprus is famous for.

Best thing though is to venture off the beaten track in TRNC and you will see some incredible scenery, views that have still not been spoilt etc. Then of course places like St Hilarion, Kyrenia castle, Old City of Gazi Magusa, Salamis, Soli etc.

The sea front area between the new Cornaro restaurant in Catalkoy and the army base is dreadful. Back up toward the residential area where there used to be scrubland and is now a 'development', is getting worse by the day.

We have many friends family and business contacts visiting and they always mention the litter. However they love the place so it wont stop them coming. Other visitors will be put off. Abhorence of litter is not limited to Brits. but is generally hated by many nationalities when they holiday. They are called tourists and they spend money!

I'm sure the South also have their problems with the litter, as we do in the UK.

No1 Doyen

The South and the UK do have their problems with litter but it is in the UK culture (ish!) and legislation to do something about it. In the South it is probably more to do with legislation. In any event, I do not believe it matters what other countries do as the TRNC should be doing everything possible to encourage a major source of income - tourism. In addition, the perception of the TRNC to the 'outside world' is vital and the environment is a very 'topical' issue (whether we think it is going overboard or not). There are also the health issues to consider.

I am afraid this is a subject I am very passionate about but I will get off my 'soap box' now!

Bill, do I hear you say, thank God for that!

Regards

Geoff

instead of name and shame, we should start a dirty village competition with the prize being a pack of black bin bags!

Not at all Geoff. I agree with you. Although I have to say that on my last visit acouple of weeks ago there did'nt seem to be the amount of litter there was back in June.

Bill, fair point. Progress is being made, particularly in the towns. When you are here again, we may bump into each other falling over empty bottles. LOL

turbo,

I don't live in the south but when I'm down there it does give the impression of being cleaner and the penalty signs are all over the place. I think they have turned the corner while the north is still lagging behind.

You have it spot on. However, being the positive chap that I am, the north will get there!

I think you will find that the Nicosia road is cleaned annually but alas the litter bugs get started on replenishing it even when they are trying to clean it up. Education, Education is needed.

Cyprusishome, I saw this monstrosity as well, couldn’t believe it. My partner is a town planner and couldn’t believe something like that got permission. It totally blocks the view of the mountain. Awful!

As for the litter, it does seem a problem in parts of TRNC especially more out of town locations. The sides of the Famagusta duel carriageway were awful!

We have a place in Spain and some of the areas are spoilt by the graffiti, something which I didn,t notice much of in North Cyprus. But I may have been blinded by the sunshine!!

Cyprusishome,Wilts Girl.

The development is Skyline .Last year we were visiting Hilltop ,just being nosey as many moons ago were thinking of buying place offplan and wondered what it looked like now., ,The whole hillside and development is overshadowed by this multi storey carbuncle, .Pity used to be nice over there .Saying that, if you believe the blurb, its a good investment.Guaranteed rental 7% pa for 3 years and a appreciation in price of 40%-60% in 3 years.

Just shows you ,"where there IS muck, there's brass"

As for rubbish, going west near Camlibel at the reservoir, we always stop at the hill view. Its takes a lot of skill taking a photo and keeping rubbish out of the frame.

The bin is always overflowing ,so people just dump rubbish round and under it.

Okay maybe the council should empty it now and again, but they cant really afford to go out there for 1 bin. Why cant people ,when see the bin is full just take there rubbish away in a little bag.Maybe a few signs "TAKE YOUR RUBBISH HOME" would be in order, and then fine people. Dont know what the education at schools in N.C is like on this matter, but hopefully the younger generation will take a greater interest . what with all the publicity over climate change . Certainly breaks your heart to see the litter sometimes at turtle beach, especially as there are bins.

We love Northern Cyprus, but it is a shame the government don't act on the rubbish problem.

Our friends visited with us last year, they hated the "North" because they thought is was a "bit of a dump" as they put it! They didn't like the sight of all the builders rubble/rubbish left everywhere, nor did they like how new pavements were laid unevenly and unfinished.

Needless to say they won't be visiting again. We actually see past this......................but you can understand how visitors see it.

Re; message number 8. There was an article in the "Kibris" TC newspaper mentioning the area by the Hazreti Omer ( I think the area youre talking about) being turned into a rubbish tip and comparing to the big tip in Dikmen.

Shame, that area used to be one of my favorite places to visit each trip, since they developed it I stopped going.

The ravine between the army base and the little historic building used to be one of the most beautiful areas to visit.

Is nothing sacred to the bottom feeding scavengers called "builders " of North Cyprus?

I am surprised that was allowed, it is so close to the army base.
