The Minister of Tourism, Environment and Culture Kemal Dürüst has said that they aim to attract one million tourists to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus this year. Speaking on Bayrak Haber yesterday, the Minister noted that they will reach this aim with the support provided by motherland Turkey.

Reminding that 2011 has been declared as the TRNC year of tourism in Turkey, Mr. Dürüst called on Turkish people to choose the TRNC as their holiday destination.

The Minister of Tourism, Environment and Culture pointed out that tourism is the most important sector of the country in terms of promoting the TRNC both politically and socially.

“We should unite with all political parties and civil society organizations to promote the tourism sector” he added.

Noting that Turkey is not the only targeted market for tourism this year, Dürüst said that contacts have been established with some other countries, including the Netherlands, Switzerland and Iran as well.

Also touching upon the Ministry’s environmental policies, the Minister said works continue to raise public awareness towards environmental protection and reminded that 2011 is also declared as the year of environment.

He announced that 500 volunteer environmentalists will be chosen in the coming days that will be inspecting any breaches of environmental regulations, and noted that there is also a plan to form a group of environmental police.

Stressing that environmental penalties have come into force, Minister Dürüst called on citizens to take care of the environment.

hiya foster i do beleive they did, however i have to warn you. They have changed the food concept. There used to be a lucnh buffet and a dinner buffet. Now gone.Reason I was told that many british people living here took advantage. Now they have introduced various food outlets around the casino and you will not get served unless you are a member. Now they can monitor what you spend in the casino. So if you want a pizza for instance they will tell you if you have enough points to qualify for it.

I'm going to tell her myself when I get home tonight - mind you she'll be doing the ironing so I won't interrupt her. )

Lilli take no notice. You can spot henpecked men a mile away. I feel sorry for them both. I know who wears pinny in their kitchen. So long as it is not the only thing they are wearing I hope, especially when the grand kids are around. Mind boggles.

Meanwhile...back to tourism and 'the year of the environment', does this mean a crack down on fly tipping, rubbish being thrown anywhere and dumping in ravines?

It is not what the ministers say, or declare in Turkey! It is the cost of having a holiday in Cyprus. Your average package tourist gets better deals in Southern Turkey and the Balkans throughout the Summer, why will they choose Cyprus? Long gone the days when we boasted 2 people could have a three course meal and a bottle of vine for 15 pounds in the Harbour, OR buy cheap beer!

The minister is obviously hoping the mainland Turks will make up the 1 million he is referring to - I say he was drunk when he made the statement. Many European destinations' air fares are as cheap as those to Cyprus. Package holidays from Turkey cost just as much to Italy and many Eastern European or North African countries nowadays. In fact when there are offers of cheap deals to Europe by the likes of Pegasus, Cyprus is always left out of the equation! CTA has just gone bust - how does he intend to fly 1 million tourists on top of the seats taken up by the usual local travellers?

I seem to recall reading a couple or so years ago that there were then about 12,000 holiday beds in NC?

Lets be generous and say it's now 20,000

20,000 x 52 (a week each on average?) = just over 1,040,000 but that's with 100% occupancy (not very likely).

I wonder if the person claiming these figures is the same one who calculates other economies in NC?

Oh, it also needs 8.5 full planes (320 seats) a day .............. each way!
