It is a must for Turkish Cypriot ladies to buy presents when on holiday for close friends and manyrelatives to first, second and third degrees. They spend almost the whole of their free time when on holiday looking for small presents. I think its crazy. I will buy only if I find something special that will really please and never buy anything just for the sake of it.

Do other nationalities have similar crazy habbits?

I always buy chocolate for everyone. They love English chocolate, or at least so they tell me. Where as they all give me Molohiya, Peksemet and Hellim. How's that for good relations.

Ismet presents the bain of my life my wife is the same as yours and with five children and attached partners and couple of grandchildren its painful for a pensioner

There are certain shops in Lefkosa and Girni where they shake my hand as my wife goes into the shop they know they are in for a good day .I go white

I wouldn't mind if it were a holiday it isn't its part of a lifestyle where we spend 3/4 months a year in the TRNC we could buy more flights if she didn't

Thank god that the Lira is weakening at the moment

When leaving TRNC and a present is necessary, I buy 6 small cups and saucers embossed with a map of Cyprus, a briki and a pack of Con coffee. Job done for under a tenner!

I used to drerad going to pick my mother form heathrow/stanstead.Being pushed in a wheel chair whilst pushing a trolley with someone else carrying the second trolley.Bless her.She even once put a good argument with custom officer because they wanted to take the drum of home made hellim she brought over, with her none existant english.

She got them.

As for myself,I don't do presents anymore, after so many years of receiving boxer shorts and hankerchiefs, thanks to my ex mother in-law.Bless her.

Either tell me what you want or you get nothing.Same for myself too.

What happened to sending 'wish you were here cards' like we used to send in the 60's and 70's?

Bill - went out of date (like me). Probably because most of the people we sent them to were people we really didn't wish were there at all

Bill, do you mean "Weather is here, wish you were beautiful"?

Ismet, we tend to do it the other way round, that is take presents to people when we go, rather than bring them home!

kaiserphil,

"Ismet, we tend to do it the other way round, that is take presents to people when we go, rather than bring them home! "

Sure we do that too if visiting friends but not when on holiday staying at a hotel.

The Japanese are almost obsessive about giving and receiving gifts on every occasion complete with a great deal of ritualistic bowing of heads when a gift is received.
